After I had my son, I moved to Boston to go to school. I was in for a wonderful awakening! BRAIDS!! Finally, with just a few THOUSAND hours of painful sitting and a few hundred dollars, I could be a beautiful nubian queen with LONG HAIR! My first time with braids wasn't the best experience. They put them in so tight, I had bumps all over my scalp and of course it itched so I aggravated the situation by scratching my scalp all the time! And they burned the ends so all my shirts had those pills on the back. A fine beautiful mesh shirt? No way with these babies! They were so heavy and hot too!

As I became more informed on the different styles of braids, I chose the smaller braids with a better quality of hair. I also chose to have my braider dip the ends in hot water. I loved this style so much but it took so long for them to braid my hair and it was so expensive!

My whole life was revolving around my braids. I couldn't swim or work up too much of a sweat because they would smell. Plus, they were so long that they were not really practical for my active lifestyle.
Well, wouldn't you know it, after years of braiding and unbraiding, I just HAD to get a weave then! I was getting tired of all the sitting around and having to take out my braids was torture. So my beautiful, healthy hair was subjected to more abuse! It was finally growing thick and healthy, but I was determined to cover it up with the fake stuff. So I straightened my hair so it would blend in with the weave and had it cornrowed in. Oh my god, I have never itched so much in my life! I wanted to take my head and just rub it against everything. It was so bad! Plus, it didn't look that good because I had no idea how to keep it up! I sure didn't feel as beautiful as I thought I would. I mean, how beautiful can you be standing around scratchin' at your scalp like you have lice or something! (SMILE)

So after a month of so, I ripped the weave out of my hair. I then took out most of my own hair with it. Not to mention how bad it smells! This wasn't right! Now I had hair that was ripped and nappy so I wore it in a bun for a while. Well, I don't know what came over me, but I went to the salon and got ANOTHER WEAVE! This time a curly one!

My natural beauty awakening is coming!.....
