Drug Use Among College Students
Philip MacKinnon

As a whole drug use among college students, historically known as partiers, alcoholics, and addicts, seems to be falling to the wayside. According to Constable Walter Silver of the RCMP drug enforcement department, the only problem with drugs they have had on a Windsor campus was last year when a graduate from the University of Windsor making Ecstasy in a home lab.

During Silvers five years with the drug enforcement department he said he has never heard of a problem at St. Clair College. "I think it's (drug use) more of a problem for high school students more then college students. We are more grown up and moved beyond it." Was a first year student's view on drug use among college students.

Is there a drug problem among St. Clair College students? "Among college students I do not see a drug problem." said Scott Mills a first year journalism student concerning college drug use.

The majority of drugs used by college students are cannabis and their derivatives as well as ecstasy and "Special K"; hard-core drug use, such as cocaine, heroine, and speed, seems to be falling by the wayside. According to one first year student who chose not to be named, "Alcohol, Weed and Ecstasy are what's used most."

"I think the drug used most on campus and among college student's is Alcohol." Was one student's opinion, "With a pub on campus I'm not surprised at the numbers of students who drink." According to first year journalism student Andy Mahon "I quit because I could feel myself getting dumber."

June Edgar a guidance councillor said that she has not personally seen any evidence of a drug problem at St. Clair College. She say's there are a few students who smoke marijuana, and use of the drug Ecstasy at parties. She also commented that for her drugs are more of a concern for her and her 17-year-old son who attends high school.
