*The coup was extremely violent and was supported by parts of the military and the majority of the elites of Haiti.  Both groups who were threatened by Aristide's commitment to policies similar to that of Liberation Theology.  (i.e. - emphasize on policies that aided the poor.)

*Aristide spent a 3 year period of exile during military rule

*Estimates between 3,000-5,000 Haitians were killed during this time

*Large scale fleeing on boats.  U.S. Coast Guard rescued 41,342 Haitians between 1991-1992.
