Quotes and Work

The Importance of Economic Research

Viewing economics from the perspective of macro-economic policies is one way of understanding the importance of economic research. As the name implies, macro-economic polices are designed to have widespread impacts, even beyond the national borders within which they are implemented. The widespread nature of the impacts means that the choice and implementation of these policies cannot be treated trivially; policy makers cannot confidently implement a policy if they are uncertain whether it will yield improved rather than diminished economic welfare. Sound economic research provides the sort of information that can help to reduce the uncertainty. The absence of such research leads to uninformed economic policies, which at best are gambles with the welfare of numerous individuals, and at worse, are prescriptions for economic ruin.

BSc. Econ Class of '86

Optimal deliveries. How does a delivery company optimize its vehicle routing in the face of fluctuating customer demands? There are no simple answers to this potentially costly issue, says Wilfrid Laurier University professor Dr. Michael Haughton. Seemingly no-brainer solutions such as reorganizing routes on a daily basis can in fact create greater inefficiency. His research is using simulations to study the topic, particularly from the point of customer satisfaction.

Novel Translation: Professor Haughton also did some translation work for Perverzion, by Author Yuri Andrukhovych.
