At School, Diversity is Not Tolerated

Recently, several Windsor High School students formed a Gay-Straight Alliance to fight against the prevalent homophobia in today's society. The Gay-Straight Alliance's major goal is to eliminate discrimination toward gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and promote respect through awareness and education. The Windsor High School Gay-Straight Alliance decided to use posters to inform the student body and faculty.

Though we were prepared for some opposition, we were, and still are, completely surprised by the outpouring of homophobic words and gestures, such as the removal of numerous posters and violent outbursts. One day, I noticed that a poster was missing, then I turned to look at the unity mural and the hypocrisy become clear. In discussing with my classmates, we agree that Windsor High School prides itself on diversity and tolerance, yet its definition of diversity itself does not encompass the full spectrum of people: diversity is purely judged by skin color, with no consideration toward sexual preference. Windsor High School supposedly embraces differences, but the recent actions and words of numerous students reveal the reality of Windsor High School's latent hate. If Windsor High School wishes to keep true to its mission statement of "Unity through Diversity," the student body should reconsider its midset to correctly reflect this.
