Ida woman shot dead A middle-aged woman was shot dead last evening in what was being described as a robbery and the police have since held one man in connection with the incident. The woman, Surujnie Singh, who is said to be in her late forties, of Lot A Cornelia Ida, West Bank Demerara, was discovered dead by her reputed husband Namoon Narine. Police last evening said that the man, who is a money changer and also deals in vehicle parts, reported that he went out and on his return he found his wife dead. According to reports, the woman was cooking at the time of the incident and her body was found face down in blood next to the back door in the kitchen. One resident last evening said that one of the woman’s arms appeared to be broken. Up to 9:30 pm when Stabroek News left the scene the woman’s body was still reported to be in the home as the police continued their investigation. Stabroek News understands that the man told law enforcement officers that he left their home at around 4.30 pm and returned at around 7 pm and discovered his wife dead. The couple shared a bottom flat while the top flat of their home is under renovation. Reports indicated that the man operated his business in a small building at the front of his home and he said that a quantity of money that was in his business place is missing. It was reported that the man usually told the woman not leave the home when he was out and that she must always keep the gate closed. Upon his return he found the gate open and he immediately realised that something was wrong. Further reports indicated that the woman might have been shot under her chin and the bullet exited at the back of her head. Residents in the area were last night puzzled as they said that they had heard no gunshot neither did they see anything suspicious before the woman’s body was discovered. Last night scores of residents gathered outside the home but were not allowed near the yard as the police had cordoned off the area. Singh is said to have lived in the community all her life and around two years ago she moved in with Narine Friday August 22, 2003
