Webhosts to choose (web space providers)
The two most important factors to consider when choosing a provider are the support and the facilities.
Great customer and technical support can make or break your web site hosting experience. Expertise counts, too.
Webhosts' facilities and support
Storage
Storage space is the amount of memory in MegaBytes on
Web servers that can be provided to you for your Web files. Your Web files can include html pages, images, audio and video files, log files, data from on-line forms, and anything else you wish to load.
Your-name.com
Your-name.com means you can use your very own domain name. This makes your Web presence more professional and more memorable to visitors.
Webhosts - i.e.
International domain names
Many web site owners use country domains with TLD's (=TopLevelDomainnames) other than .com, .net or .org. Webhosts provide
hosting with international domain names, but many webhosts do not register international domains.
WebHosting
Every Web site is stored on a computer--called a server--that is connected to the Web. When your web site is stored on one of these servers, your site is being "hosted" by the server.
Bandwidth
This is the amount of bytes per month (i.e. 500 Mb is 500 million bytes, 1 Gb is giga or billion bytes). Unlimited bandwidth is rare.
Connection Speed
Just how fast is their connection
to the Internet? Just because somebody claims to have T3
service doesn't mean much if they have to pass through a
series of less speedy routers.
Look into how closely connected the service is to the Internet. The farther, or the more routers, the webhost is from the Internet, the greater the risk you run of suffering from slow-ages.
Reliablity
Nothing and nobody is perfect. How often do they backup their servers?
Support
Is there on-line documentation? Can
you contact support staff by phone or e-mail?
Do not expect free help when it comes to setting up CGI scripts
and other work. But verify that hosting companies
can answer your questions.
Unix Server
Unix can do everything that NT can do and much more.
E-mail addresses (incoming)
You are given POP (Post Office Protocol) e-mail addresses in most cases. This means you can receive e-mails that are addressed to yourname@yourdomainname.com.
SMTP Service (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) (outgoing)
Can you originate e-mail from the hosting servers
under your domain name?
( yourname@yourdomainname.com )
You need SMTP e-mail support to have e-mails addressed to yourname@yourdomainname.com
Are They the Real Hosting Company?
Check to be sure
that the hosting company is in fact really the provider and
not a reseller for another company!
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. FTP utilities are used to transfer Web pages and other files from your hard drive to a remote server.
CGI scripting
A script is a program that runs on a server and processes requests in response to input from the browser. There is client scripting as well as server scripting.
SSI
Server Side Includes.
This is the ability to include files from the server inside an HTML document by placing tags in the HTML file that link to those files.
SSI makes it unnecessary to include multiple copies of the same information in the HTML file. This makes it easier to work with the same information used on multiple pages, such as a navigation bar.
.HTACCESS Access
Password protecting directories.
