GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZED INDIAN TRIBES IN THE STATE OF INDIANA
The "status" of the Wea Indian Tribe does exist in Indiana and we have a Tribal Council which is the governing body and our Clan Mothers. The Wea Indian Tribe filed their "Letter of Intent" with the USA Federal B.I.A. government on Jan 15, 2007, and it was received by the USA government on March 21, 2007. The "Letter of Intent" is the first step toward Federal Acknowledgement.
The state of Indiana had for the first time in the history of the state, a "Native American Indian Affairs Commission" established; which was embodied in the year 2004. WIT Council members worked on the ground floor helping to build the Commission and had a hand in helping to write its governing documents. Since then it was shut down several times and recently reopened again under a slightly different name "Native American & Indian Affairs Commission of Indiana." WIT Chief John Boyd currently holds a seat on the Commission, 2015.

Below are sources for you to "verify" the status of any Tribal Body of Indians. When in doubt, call the Department of the Interior (D.O.I.) or the Bureau of Indian Affairs (B.I.A.).
Sources To Verify Native American Tribes
The Wea Indian Tribe should be listed on a few of these pages, but alas they do not have any contact information sited and therefore we cannot contact them to have them add us to their pages.
Sadly, Indiana State does not have any State Recognized Tribes to date, 2015.
