"History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Co.'s, Indiana" Goodspeed Bros. and Co., 1884 ELIJAH W. RAMSEY, a progressive farmer and stock-riser of Pleasant Run Township, was born February 16, 1820, in Lawrence County, Ind., and is a member of the children here named born to JOHN and SARAH (CHAMBERS) RAMSEY: MILTON, ALFRED, FRANCIS, ELIJAH W., JOHN, JOSEPH, CATHARINE and ADALINE. The parents were natives of North Carolina, but immigrated to Indiana in 1819, participating in all the hardships and inconveniences of pioneer life. Elijah W. secured only such education as was obtainable in the pioneer cabins of his boyhood, and February 1, 1844, wedded SUSAN ERWIN, daughter of JAMES and ELIZABETH (BODKINS) ERWIN, who died leaving one son, named JAMES H. November 13, 1848, Mr. Ramsey was wedded to his second and present wife, then TABITHA CARESS, daughter of SIMON and MARTHA (TEAGUE) CARESS, who were natives of Kentucky and North Carolina respectively, Mr. Caress being a school teacher by profession. The children born to this second marriage were: EZEKIEL, JOHN, JOANNA, MARTHA, ISAAC, SUSAN, FLORA B., JOSEPH and an infant that died in infancy.
