"History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Co.'s, Indiana" Goodspeed Bros. and Co., 1884 HENRY LEE, a native Hoosier, was born December 4, 1831, in Orange County, the second son of Isaac and Dorothy (Letherman) Lee, who were natives respectively of Kentucky and Mississippi, the former settling in Orange County in 1814, two years before Indiana became a State. Until attaining his majority the subject of this biography lived with his parents, during which time he received a common school education. At eighteen he began the wagon-maker's trade, at which he has worked the greater part of his life. August, 1862, at one of the darkest periods in the history of the late war, he volunteered in Company A, Sixty-sixth Indiana Regiment, and after participating in numerous hot battles and wearisome campaigns he was honorably discharged June 3, 1865. In the battle at Richmond, Ky., he received a severe gun-shot wound in the right wrist. For the past two years Mr. Lee has been engaged in farming, and is the owner of 247 acres of good land (Bono Township, Lawrence County, Ind.). To his marriage with Miss Nancy J., daughter of Thomas S. and Nancy (Farmer) Smith, eight children have been born, named Andrew J., Nancy W., Sarah E., Mary E., Dorothy A., Lydia E., Eliza J. and one that died in infancy unnamed.
