Class Features
All of the following are Class Features of the grand artificer prestige class.
All grand artificers have respect for created items and constructs, and seek wherever possible to avoid permanently destroying them. If a permanent creation should happen to be destroyed, an artificer must attempt to build another one of similar type at his first opportunity. (This applies to permanent creations, such as constructs, magical devices, wondrous items, and permanently enchanted weapons and armor, but not to items with charges or items which are used up, such as tokens, potions, wands, and scrolls. The artificer is free to determine the details of the created item; the important result is that no overall lowering of the number of creations in the world results.) A grand artificer who strays from devotion to creation loses all grand artificer spells, abilities, and benefits. He may not progress any farther in levels as a grand artificer.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Grand artificers gain no weapon or armor proficiency.
Spells per Day: When a new grand artificer level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in a spellcasting class he belonged to before adding the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained, except for an increased effective level of spellcasting. If a character had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a grand artificer, he must decide to which class he adds the new level for purposes of determining spells per day.
Artifact Focus: A grand artificer loses any and all ability to cast spells that do not target objects, as well as any and all ability to control or animate non-construct creatures. A grand artificer receives a bonus to all Use Magic Device, Disable Device, and Knowledge (arcana) checks equal to twice grand artificer level.
Analytical Eyes (Ex): Grand artificers of at least 3rd level see auras as per the aurasight spell, to a distance of 30'. This ability functions at all times, even in antimagic fields and the like. At 5th level, the range extends to 60'.
Deconstruction (Ex): When defeating or disabling an enemy construct or device, grand artificers gain insight on the utility and effectiveness of different construction methods. A grand artificer of at least 4th level (who is obligated to build a similar or analogous device or construct) receives 50% of the exp cost of the construct or device, added to the artificer's creation pool. This occurs provided that the artificer took part in the defeat and was able to closely examine the parts afterward. This exp need not be fully used up in the reconstruction.
Instant Golem (Su): Once per week, a grand artificer is able to "lose" a spell or infusion to animate an appropriate amount of material into a Medium golem, as a standard action. The golem serves loyally for a number of hours equal to the level of the lost infusion, and is in all other respects a typical golem of type determined by material. When the instant golem expires, it crumbles into rubble.
