Project Concern Indianapolis, INC.

Description of our Organization

Project Concern Indianapolis was initiated in 1994 as a program of Project Concern International, a non-profit health and development organization.  The Indianapolis Birthing Project (IBP) is the primary program of Project Concern Indianapolis.  In 1999 Project Concern Indianapolis, Inc. acquired local 501-(c)(3) status and is now an independent organization offering over seven years of community service to date.

 OUR MISSION

The  mission of Project Concern Indianapolis' Birthing Project is to keep more babies alive and healthy by providing direction, emotional support and education to their mothers and supportive partners before and after delivery.

The IBP works by pairing pregnant women at-risk of delivering low birth weight babies, Little Sisters, with volunteer community mentors, called SisterFriends.  Little Sisters are often young women who use tobacco, alcohol or drugs, have poor nutrition, chronically miss prenatal appointments, are low income, have limited family support, are from a minority group, or they are teenagers pregnant for the first time.  The role of the SisterFriends is to provide support, mentoring and counseling.  IBP has welcomed nearly 700 infants into the program with a program infant mortality rate of 1.3% and a non - repeat pregnancy of less than 1%.
