INTASC Principle #1
INTASC #1 States:
- The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipine(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.
- Knowledge: The teacher understands major concepts, assumptions, debates, processes of inquiry, and ways of knowing that are central to the discipline(s) s/he teaches.
- Dispositions: The teacher realizes that subject matter knowledge is not a fixed body of facts but is complex and ever-evolving. S/he seeks to keep abreast of new ideas and understandings in the field.
- Performances: The teacher effectively uses multiple representations and explanations of disciplinary concepts that capture key ideas and link them to students' prior understandings.
This is what INTASC #1 means to me:
INTASC #1 means that the teacher must have a strong understanding of the subject that he or she is teaching. The teacher must be able to apply what they are teaching to someting that the student will be able to understand. Also, with a strong understanding of the subjects being taught, the teacher will be able to select and use visual aids that will aid in the learning process.
