Warsaw Speedway Gets Season Underway

Although wet and muddy conditions were prevalent across the Midwest, 33 winged sprint cars showed up Saturday night for the 1989 opening of the Warsaw Speedway.
Terry Starks drove his winged sprint to his first feature win at Warsaw while Ron McKenzie started out the season in champion style with his first Late Model feature win.
In the winged sprint feature, Starks started on the pole and led to the finish as he fought off challenges from Mike Mann and Terry Shepherd in route to the checkered flag. Shepherd passed Jeff Walker with only two laps remaining for the second spot followed by Walker, Mann, Tony Elliott, Van Gurley, Tom Chalk and John Althouse. Starks, Mann and Gurley picked up wins in the winged sprint heats and Dane Ronk captured the B Main win.
In late model action, Glenn Bradley took the early lead of the feature event until lap four when Butch Boggs gained the first spot. Ron McKenzie and Bradley each then led several laps apiece until a flat tire side-lined Bradley and McKenzie paved the way to the finish for the win. Allen Marsh finished second with Terry Shroufe, Dave Fitzpatrick, Rick Spangler, Bradley and Randy Woodling next across the finish line. Boggs and Bruce Hogue were winners in the late model heats.

Atkins and Boggs at Warsaw

Two new winners made their debut in victory lane on Hoosier Tire Night Saturday at the Warsaw Speedway. Bimbo Atkins won the winged sprint feature and Butch Boggs captured the late model feature win.
In the sprint main, Jeff Walker took the early lead, but after 5 laps, his car broke and Steve Kline assumed control. Brian Tyler moved in to challenge and then Atkins also closed in to make it a 3-way battle. Atkins went back and forth with Kline near the end and pulled out front for the win at the checkered. Kline was 2nd over Tyler, Brett Mann (who rolled his car earlier in the race), Randy Woodling, Dane Ronk, Sam Davis and Jim Bradford. Den England and Mann won heats while Tyler took the dash win. Atkins set quick time at 15.28.
Glenn Bradley took a commanding lead in the late model feature until his car slowed suddenly on lap 15 and DeWayne May inherited the lead. Butch Boggs started to close and on the final lap, they were side by side. As they approached lapped traffic, Boggs dipped low to get the edge and take the win in a photo finish. May was 2nd over Bruce Hogue, Ray Chambers, Bradley, Tom Beezley, Dave Gray, Gary Baker and Doug Method. Beezley and Hogue won heats with Bradley the dash winner. May set fast time.
Street Stock heat winners were Arnold Prater and Shane Denny. The Street Stock main was delayed due to curfew.
