Analysis of Hebrews
Introductory-
Date: About 64 A.D. From internal evidence in the book it was written late in the first centruy.
To whom addressed: To Jewish Christians. There is no reference to the location either of the writer or those to whom it is written.
Purpose: To show the preeminence of Christianity over Judaism as seen in its founder, Jesus Christand the new covenant as better than the old. The author shows that Christ has fulfilled and more than filled all the law or old covenant. The book is filled with warnings and exhortations. Judaizing teachers had come in and were trying to shake the faith of many of the Jewish Christians.
Authorship: The author of this epistle is not positively known because it is not stated in the epistle. Tow of the most probable are Timothy or Paul. The style and his ability and qualifications to do so, are given as evidence for the Pauline authorship. Also II Peter 3:15, "And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you" is believed by some to be a proof of Pauline authorship.
