The Gospels

In the O.T. the Messiah is revealed under various aspects, but chiefly four as follows:

  1. King of Israel;
  2. Servant of Jehovah;
  3. Son of Man;
  4. Son of God.

The four gospels harmonize with these and also there were four representative classes of people on the earth whose peculiar needs were met by these four aspects; namely,

  1. Jews,
  2. Romans,
  3. Greeks,
  4. and the Christian Church composed of believing representatives of all three.

  1. Matthew wrote for the Jews and presents Jesus as the king of Israel;
  2. Mark for the Roman presenting Him as the Servant of Jehovah;
  3. Luke for the Greek as the Son of Man;
  4. John for the Christian Church as the Son of God.

The first three are called Synoptics from two Greek words sun which means together and opsis which means a view because they present the same general view of Christ as distinguished from John's Gospel which presents a different view.
