LOOKING THOUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD”  Have you ever tried to view life through the eyes of a child? Imagine being nine years old and walking though a museum or playing ball with your friends, when all of a sudden your best friend falls to the ground shaking and jerking with no fore warning. You stand there stunned and afraid because you have no idea what is happening. When the episode is finished, an adult runs over to help them and you rush over to call their name, but your friend doesn’t recognize you. Later your best friend is totally ashamed and doesn’t want to play with you or be around others who witnessed what happened and you don’t understand why. The adult in charge explains that your friend has epilepsy and what you just saw was a seizure. You ask, " What is epilepsy and what are seizures?" In essence, no child should have to endure that kind of embarrassment and pain. It is my desire to educate the community, schools, workplace as well as individuals though advocacy and service about the truths and myths of epilepsy. I chose looking though the eyes of a child as a theme for my mission statement because that is where a new beginning in epilepsy education will initiate. If we enter into the schools at the third, fourth and fifth grade level and began teaching them about epilepsy, we will have a head start on ignorance. This website is not dedicated to children with epilepsy, but to each and everyone that this condition affects. Without proper education, training, and the expertise to handle and deal with this situation effectively, the barriers and stigmas will continue.
