The homosexual lifestyle is clearly condemned in the Bible (God's Word). In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded, "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable (Lev. 18:22 NIV, Italics added). In the New Testament, the apostle Paul declared, "Because of this [idolatry], God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion" (Rom. 1:26-27 Italics added). He listed "homosexual offenders" one type of people (among others) who "will not inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Cor. 6:9). Since the Bible clearly condemns homosexuality, why then do some pastors preach the contrary, and argue that homosexuality is not a sin in and of itself?
Most pro-gay clergy are either liberal or neo-orthodox in their bibliology; they deny the inerrancy of Scripture. They may admit the Bible contains passages that condemn homosexuality, but they do not believe those passages are God-inspired per-se. At best those passages of Scripture have an outdated social relevance, so say the liberals.
However, there are other so-called "evangelical" clergy that claim to believe the entire Bible is the inerrant Word of God, but they twist and distort what it teaches about homosexuality. Their terribly flawed conclusions are largely rooted in false distinctions. For example, they make a false distinction between homosexual promiscuity and homosexual monogamy. They admit that homosexual promiscuity is sin, but not homosexual monogamy. They argue that the men of Sodom and Gomorrah were judged (Gen. 19) merely because they were sexually promiscuous (vv. 4-7); that their judgment had nothing to do with their sexual orientation. But nowhere does Scripture make such a distinction! It gives no guidelines on how to practice homosexuality correctly. There is not even one example of a same-sex relationship that God blessed. By twisting the Hebrew, Greek, and English terms in the text, the pro-gay clergy have tried to contend that Ruth and Naomi, David and Jonathan, even Paul and Timothy were same-sex couples that God blessed. Such absurd conclusions are shamed by responsible exegesis.
Sadly, they also make a false distinction between two kinds of homosexual people: those who were born heterosexual (but then deviated), and those who were born homosexual. They admit that those ex-heterosexuals are living in sin, but they condone the homosexuality of those who were born with their gay orientation. They argue that Romans 1:26-27 applies only to homosexuals in the former category, but not those in the latter category simply because Paul speaks against people who abandon heterosexuality and choose to pursue homosexuality. But nowhere does Scripture make such a distinction as this one either! Nowhere does it even implicitly teach that even some homosexuals are born with their gay orientation! (Even from a secular perspective, there is not one scientific analysis that has proven that homosexuality is genetic.) Furthermore, since they admit that Romans 1:26-27 shows that natural-born heterosexuals can turn homosexual, then why do they typically argue that "natural-born" homosexuals can never truly turn heterosexual?! Something is very wrong with this picture.
No matter how well-meaning they are, the pro-gay clergy are leading the Church away from God, and into shame and confusion. With their false counsel they do extreme harm to Christians who wrestle with homosexual temptation! They must be rebuked prayerfully and without compromise, so they might repent not only for the their own sake, but for the sake of those they have so terribly deceived.
