Why Should we Believe There Is a God?

What makes us Christians so certain that God exists? After all, we do not see Him with our eyes, or hear Him with our ears, or feel Him with our hands. Furthermore, we have no scientific means to actually prove God's existence. So is there really any logical reason to believe that He actually exists? Is there?

While it is true that God’s existence cannot be proven with a scientific formula, it cannot be confuted by the same means. But if it is scientific evidence you want, consider these facts: The earth is 93 million miles from the sun. If the earth were a little too close (approx. 5%), it would disintegrate. If it were a little too far (approx. 20%), it would freeze. The size of the earth, the rate at which it rotates and revolves, the position of its axis, and the contents of its atmosphere (80.5% nitrogen and 19.5% oxygen) all play a vital role in its survival. If any of those factors were altered in but a slight way, then the earth could not sustain life. It requires a lot of faith to believe that by chance, the earth and the sun “banged” into existence at precisely the right distance from each other so that life on earth could exist. It requires even more faith to believe that by chance, the earth is precisely the right size; that its axis is tilted at precisely the right angle; that it rotates and revolves at precisely the right speed; and that it contains precisely the right atmosphere so that life on earth could exist! What are the odds?! It actually takes more faith to believe in those odds than to believe that there is a Creator who fine-tuned this solar system just right, so that this planet could sustain life. It is no wonder why the Scriptures say, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20 NIV).

Consider the philosophical implications of atheism. If there is no God, then there is no ultimate hope for the future! Humanism insists that mankind is basically good, and that scientific enlightenment is the answer to man’s problems. Scientific enlightenment is increasing at an exponential rate, but is it really solving man’s problems? Just watch the news!!! Even if such things as terrorism, genocide, bigotry, and war suddenly stopped (out of the “goodness” of mankind’s heart), we would still have to contend with all the natural disasters and pestilences that keep growing at an alarming rate (despite all of our scientific enlightenment)! Besides, why should atheists and humanists even see those things as problems? According to what they believe, such things have always been a part of life. If that is really true, then why do they long for a world without them (as we all do)? That is something only the Bible promises unconditionally.

Finally, consider the socio-moral implications of atheism. If there is no God, then right and wrong are always left up to the individual. Therefore one could argue, "Who says child molestation is wrong? Of course it's illegal, but why? Pedophiles do not believe there is anything wrong with their behavior, especially if children are willing participants, so why should we impose our moral standards on them?" Moreover, if there is no fixed, universal moral standard, then what is the point to having any laws at all? They just appeal to a fixed, universal moral law, which implies there is a Law Giver and Enforcer.
