The Merrillville Volunteer Fire Department Honor Gaurd first began on June 1, 1997. It was created for the purpose of giving an honorable burial for anyone who was associated with the fire department. The honor Gaurd also marches in parades for occasions like the 4th of July and Christmas. The Honor Gaurd has presented colors at the Memorial Day service and has participated in the American Legion flag disposal ceremony.The Honor Gaurd has recently presented colors at a monthly Indiana Volunteer Firemen's Assosiation meeting and a Town of Merrillville council meeting.
