"Everybody Makes Mistakes" by Starflyer 59
Album Review by Jackie Sauer

"Everybody Makes Mistakes" is the latest effort by Starflyer 59 (http://www.toothandnail.com/starflyer59). It is Jason Martin's band's tenth release on Tooth and Nail Records (http://www.toothandnail.com). Despite its incredible legacy rock n' roll, Starflyer 59 has never topped the charts to be mentioned alongside names such as dc Talk, audio adrenaline or Jars of Clay. Instead, Starflyer 59 has held a humble career of ups and downs. Yet its music has changed the face of modern Christian rock. This album is the product of their legacy.

The opener, "Play the C Chord" grabs your attention with twangy guitars and dreamy vocals, leading you into the pop melody of "No New Kind of Story" followed by seven more unbelievable tracks. After being soothingly assured that "20 Dollar Bills will never change your life," you are caught off guard by a pumping beat that pulls you into a tune filled with synthesizers and neat sounding guitars called "No More Shows" (one of the best rock/pop tunes I have ever heard). You ride along the off beats of "Just Try" and fall upon a unique blend of acoustic and electric rock called "My Name." "Dethroned King" pulls you into a magical wonderland of guitar driven rock n' roll. Next, you are "Going Places" with a beautiful blend of keyboards and guitar riffs. Then you go to "The Party" to wind down. As you sit and reflect on what you've just experienced, you hear a hidden track that sounds like Kenny G met Starflyer 59 and recorded their own rendition of "The Party." You are amazed and ready to hear it all over again.

Starflyer 59 provides a sense hope that someone is still creating rock n' roll that is strong and unique. If you've made the "mistake" of not paying attention to this band, it's okay. Everybody makes mistakes. But you must make a change today and start paying attention.
