- Students will identify small units of sound by playing phonics games.
- Students will add and/or delete phonemes orally to change syllable or words by successfully completing activities on given web sites for vowel sound identification
- Students will apply word recognition and analysis strategies using knowledge of consonant-vowel patterns and homophone by successfully completing, with at least 85% accuracy, the interactive test on vowel sounds.
- Students will identify vowel digraphs, diphthongs, and controlled vowels by successfully completing, with at least 85% accuracy, the interactive test on digraphs, diphthongs, and controlled vowels.
- Students will apply knowledge of homonyms, antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs by successfully completing, with at least 80% accuracy, the interactive story.

"The Fables of Leo Lionni"
- Students will distinguish between fiction and nonfiction when they read several books by Leo Lionni, such as Swimmy,
- Students will identify main topics presented in the works of Leo Lionni.
- Students will compare and contrast the main characters within books such as Swimmy and Alexander and the Wind Up Mouse, and also between such books.
- Students will distinguish between the poetry presented in various poetry websites offered for study, and the books in the Leo Lionni Literature-Based Unit.
