THE AMERICAN ANNUAL MONITOR

S SURNAMES

Charles SAMMIS
Age: 74
Date of Decease: 12mo. 11 1862
Dover, N.J.
He long felt the feebleness of age, and his memoranda give evidence that he had endeavored, while in health, to make his calling and election sure. At one time he wrote,

"This morning, I felt with such preciseness and endeared love as i never to be forgotten, the stretched out arm of the Lord to lead and preserve me, whom his dear Son had purchased and reconciled to the Father, by the sacrifice of Himself."

During his last illness of one week he was concious that his time for departure was near, but expressed a willingness to await his Heavenly Father's pleasure. More than once he was heard to repeat part of the following lines which he had previously copied, and added, "with which my feelings unite."

No better days can ever rise,
My cup is running over;
From east to west I turn my eyes,
Nor faintest cloud discover.

My life-this lonely human way-
Has more than purple splendor.
And kingly guests come day by day,
Their kingly gifts to render.

The earth can never be more fair,-
I know her grand perfection;
And wait while ages wax and wear,
With her, for God's direction.

I walk with the immortal strength,
Nor fear the mortal failing;
What though I stoop to death at length?
I find no room for waiting.

Joy makes me humbler than my sin-
That I should see this glory,
That I should say, "Lord enter in!
I know thee and adore thee."

I ask no gift beyond the gifts
Thy life, oh Christ, hath given-
The fountains springing from the rifts
The daily bread from Heaven.

Samuel SATTERTHWAITE
Age:
Date of Decease: 8mo. 21 1862
Tecumseh, Michigan.
An Elder.
He was among the early settlers of Friends in Michigan, wher he became acquainted with the difficulties and privations of a new country, and being of a sympathizing disposition, he was very helpful to those who were seeking for homes, entertaining them cordially at his house.

But few years elapsed before affliction marked his path, and his beloved wife, to whom he had been very closely united, was taken from him. Thus bereaved he was led to seek more earnestly for supporting Grace, to help him in his solitary walk, and to look to his Saviour for right qualification, to go out and come in before his children and those with whom he mingled.

In the establishment of the meetings of Adrian Quarterly Meeting, he was engaged with others in visiting the members of these small, remote gathers, and was often the means of encouraging them, and his house became the resting-place of friends travelling in the ministry, his experience enabling him deeply to sympathize with them in their labors of love.

As he advanced in life he became increasingly engaged earnestly to follow the example of his Saviour. In the winter of 1861 he accompanied a minister to Canada, where he gave evidence by his daily example that the language of the Psalmist- "I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever"- was the desire of his heart.

Soon after his return from his journey he found fresh trials awaiting him, giving evidence of the uncertainty of all earthly things, but in the midst of affliction he remarked, that he had been encouraged in remembering that all things shall work together for good to them that love the Lord.

His last illness was short and severe, during which few observations were made, but his friends have the well grounded hope that his end was peace.

From early life, till within a few years, his time was mostly spent at sea, and in foriegn ports, which deprive him of the benefits of Society and the company of his friends. A few days previous to his death, he remarked to a friend who had called to see him that he had said little during his illness in reference to his future prospects; that he had been, for some time, aware of his approaching dissolution; that it was a close trial to leave his near relatives and friends; and it was his earnest desire that they all might so live as to meet again in Heaven. And soon added, "I have sought the Lord by prayer, and He has favored me with His comforting presence; I trust He will not leave me; all my hope is in His mercy."
