Q1 When and where was John born?
A1 October 7, 1951 in Seymour, Indiana
Q2 I heard when John was born he had a medical condition known as spina bifida (Meninges cele). What is it?
A2 (Not directly quoted, but taken from the book "American Fool - The Roots and Improbable Rise of John Cougar Mellencamp") It is a potentially fatal condition that occurs before birth, when one of the vertebrae of a fetus fails to fuse. Fluid becomes sealed on the outside of the spine, which can cause the infant to be crippled, without the use of a limb, or worse. In John, the deformity took the form of a growth that stretched from his upper back to the base of his skull, completely covering his neck. Initially, the prognosis was gloomy. The surgery performed to remove the growth and fuse his spine at the age of six weeks, proved to be a complete success, with no lasting physical effects.
In an interview from the Special Olympics, he also said that two other people were born at the same time he was with spina bifida. He said he always saw a particular girl at the basketball games who was confined to a wheelchair. He asked someone who she was, and they told him that she was one of the others born with spina bifida. John realized it could have been him in that wheelchair, and that is one of the main reasons he did a song for the Special Olympics. Most of those with spina bifida end up like the girl in the wheelchair and are not as fortunate as John.
Q3 What's the deal with John's name being changed from Johnny Cougar --> John Cougar Mellencamp --> John Mellencamp?
A3 In 1976, Tony DeFries of MainMan Mgmt landed John a deal at MCA. When the album "Chestnut Street Incident" was released, Mellencamp discovered his last name had been changed to Cougar, courtesy of DeFries. In 1983, he added Mellencamp back to his name. In 1991 he dropped the "Cougar" moniker altogether.
Q4 How many times has he been married and how many children does he have?
A4 John has been married 3 times. Pricilla Esterline (1970-1980) and Victoria Granucci (1981-approx. 1989) were his first two wives. He has been married to Elaine Irwin since 1992. Currently, he has 5 children and 3 grandchildren.
Q5 What are the names and ages of his children?
A5
Michele; born 12/4/70 (Pricilla Esterline)
Teddi Jo; born 7/1/81 (Victoria Granucci)
Justice; born 8/14/85 (Victoria Granucci)
Hud; born 4/27/94 (Elaine Irwin)
Speck; born 4/23/95 (Elaine Irwin)
Q6 Where did he attend college and what was his major?
A6 John attended Vincennes University and his major was Communications (Broadcast Journalism).
Q7 Ive seen Johns name in print as both "John Jay Mellencamp" and "John J Mellencamp". Which is correct?
A7 Well, Tony Buechler spoke to Johns sister, Janet, at the Louisville show on 7/14/99, and she set the record straight. According to her, the "J" stands for nothing. So, John J Mellencamp would be correct.
Q8 How tall is John?
A8 In the neighborhood of 57"
Q9 What color are Johns eyes?
A9 Blue

Q1 What tattoos does John have?
A1 The one on his right arm originally was his ex-wife, Vicky. Later, he had it altered by adding a beard making it look like Jesus. He has several others that haven't been identified, including one on the inside of his right forearm. (I believe the one on his left shoulder is the Thrush Muffler logo, which is a woodpecker with a cigarette or cigar in its mouth).
Q2 What is carved on John's Gibson Dove acoustic guitar?
A2 From the MTV Unplugged book: "The night before the Mellencamp Unplugged, John decided to carve "Fuck Fascism" into his guitar. Because we've stated over and over that the purpose of the show is to showcase the songs and the simplicity of the acoustic instruments, it was pretty much impossible to film him playing without having the message flash across televisions all over America. So we compromised. John agreed to place a 'Censorship is UnAmerican' button across his whittled message. Since it only covered part of the 'U', it's a fair bet that the viewers knew exactly what point he was trying to make. Even if it did look as if it said 'Fock' Fascism." There is also a partially carved eagle that was started in the mid-80s on tour, but was never finished.
Q3 Where is John's house located in Indiana?
A3 He lives on the outskirts of Bloomington, IN, about 30 miles from his boyhood home in Seymour. Exact address? Don't ask.
Q4 What is Mellenfest '97 and '98?
A4 The Mellenfest events were Human-Wheels conventions, if you will. Approximately 300 fans (primarily from the MTM fan club and Human-Wheels mailing list from all over the world) got together in John's hometown of Seymour, IN, for 2 nights and 2 days of events which included live music and self-guided tours of Seymour. Live music included.
The Bobby Clark Band (Bobby being John's first cousin), Rusty Bladen and the Shakin' Jakes (John's current bassist, John Gunnell (aka: John E Gee) formerly played bass guitar in Rusty's band), and Jimmy Ryser (who contributed to the "Dance Naked, "Human Wheels" and "John Mellencamp" albums).
Also at the 1998 Mellenfest, fans were fortunate to have John attend. He performed one song live ("Early Bird Cafe"; solo/acoustically) and played two songs ("Your Life is Now" and "I'm Not Running Anymore") off of the then unreleased album "John Mellencamp". He was also gracious enough to stay for a while to sign some autographs. Here are some links with some pictures and stories:

Q5 Where can I view some of John's paintings?
A5 The book "Paintings and Reflections" (Harper Perennial; 10/23/98; Hardcover $40.00; Paperback $20.00) for the first time gathers beautiful full-color reproductions of John's favorite work.
John has donated his profits from the book to VH1's "Save the Music" program which helps buy musical instruments for school children. There will be no further printings of this book in the hardcover edition. There are paintings on display at the "Southern Indiana Center for the Arts", which is located in Seymour, Indiana. Here is a site with some information on the center: <http://www.compassworks.com/sica/>
There are also some pictures at the following website: (Lisa Modglin's page) <http://www.icss.net/~BandR/jm1.htm>
Q6 Where can I buy one of Johns paintings?
A6 You can contact the "Southern Indiana Center for the Arts" <http://www.compassworks.com/sica/>
Q7 Who is George Green?
A7 We are fortunate enough to have an answer directly from George: "John Mellencamp and I (grew) up in the same town. We have been close friends for many years and we are the same age. We started writing songs together after high school. I am a lyricist by profession, so for any song my name is on, I wrote the lyrics. Among my songs with John are 'Hurts so Good', 'Crumblin' Down', 'Rain on the Scarecrow', 'Human Wheels', 'Minutes to Memories' & 'Key West Intermezzo'. have also written songs recorded by several other artists, including Jude Cole, Vanessa Williams, Hall & Oates, Level 42, Girl Overboard, and Barbra Streisand". George is an indirect participant on the list. Any questions you might have in general can be emailed to the list or to Tony, and George will get them. There is no guarantee that he will reply but when he does, it has been through Tony.
Q8 Who is the model driving the cab in the "Wild Night" video?
A8 She is an Australian model, and her name is Shana Zadrick. She has often been mistaken for Cindy Crawford.
Q9 What has John's role been with Farm-Aid?
A9 John was a founding organizer of Farm-Aid along with Willie Nelson and Neil Young. Johns role is now more of a quiet supporter, letting Willie run things. The goal is to raise awareness of the plight of the American farmers. The day-long concert has occurred 13 times, most recently at the Nissan avilion in Bristow, VA, just outside Washington, D.C., on Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999.
Here are a couple of Farm-Aid sites:

Q10 Is that a "Whenever We Wanted" tour T-shirt I saw Matthew McConaughey wearing in the 1996 movie "A Time to Kill"?
A10 Yes. Matthew is a self-professed fan of Johns, and has attended at least two of Johns shows in the past couple of years. It is reported that they are friends and have even vacationed together. Also, Matthew appeared in the video for "Key West Intermezzo". Heres a publicity photo from "A Time to Kill", which shows the shirt quite clearly. http://www.movieweb.com/movie/timetokill/co8.jpg
Q11 Where can I buy the movie "Falling From Grace"?
A11 As of 7/15/99, they are available at the following sites: <http://www.reel.com> and <http://www.videoflicks.com> (Thanks to Molly on the Human-Wheels list for that info)
Q12 Why doesn't John talk in concert, and why do his shows stay much the same night after night?
A12 While John hasn't directly ever answered these questions in interviews, from other answers he has given we think we can summarize it to this:
First off, John still suffers from high anxiety and strong stage fright. It is for this reason that John rehearses his band to the point where they do not need a set-list on stage to play the show. That way, John does not have to worry before the show about what will happen on stage. He knows everyone knows their parts and what they are to play, so that's one less thing for him to worry about. John will change song order and songs over the course of a tour, but usually not in the middle of a show.
John has been talking on stage less and less over the past few tours, but we don't think this is a new development. On past tours in the 1980s when John told stories during the show, it was almost always the same stories delivered in the same way for weeks at a time. Again, another one of his ways of dealing with stage fright by knowing ahead of time what he is going to do and say. So we believe rather than John being disrespectful of his audience, he is just fighting his nerves and letting his music do his talking for him.
Q13 Why do John's shows feature the songs it does, and why are they the length they are?
A13 Again while John hasn't directly commented on this topic in interviews, we can gather the following information from separate interviews he has done:
John has not played the longer concerts he did in the 1980s since the middle 1990's when he began having health problems(which climaxed with his heart attack in 1994 while on tour). Since the mid-'90's John has stuck with a 90 to 100min concert that goes straight through with no encore.
John has decided since he doesn't feel that physically he can give the long shows he did in the '80s, he will deliver a fast-paced, high-action show. John quit doing encores in the early '80s since he knew ahead of time what songs he wanted to play. He felt that his fans deserved more respect than to make them cheer for something that would be preplanned. So, he began doing intermissions in the middle of his longer shows, and did no encore.
As John has gotten deeper into his career, his live concert show has become more and more dominated by the performances of his many hits. Here is John's reasoning for that: John has referred to a time he saw Bob Segar in concert in the 1980s, and how disappointed he was that Bob didn't do "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man"; his favorite Segar song. When he asked Bob about it, Bob said that he was just tired of doing some of his older standards.
John understood in that moment how he thinks many of his fans feel at his concert. They are his fans because he has written songs they love and he wants to be sure that he performs his most well known and loved songs. And, when you're John Mellencamp who has had almost 2 dozen notable hits, it's easy to fill an entertaining show with a majority of hits along with other songs.

A7 Toby recently retired so that he could stay close to home with his wife who recently gave birth to a baby boy.
Q8 What ever happened to Kenny Aronoff? Larry Crane? Lisa Germano? John Cascella? David Grissom?
A8
Kenny Aronoff: Here's an official site on Kenny, which hasa plethora of up-to-date information: <http://www.kennyaronoff.com> Kenny left the band in 1996 after the recording of "Mr. Happy Go Lucky". Kenny quit the band; he was not fired.
He was ready to focus on playing with other people and being a session drummer. He still lives in Bloomington, IN, those few days a year he is home. Since he left the band, he's collaborated with and toured with many artists including Melissa Etheridge, John Fogerty, The Smashing Pumpkins and Mary Chapin Carpenter among many, many others. There is much too much to mention here, so check out the website!
Larry Crane: He still plays some solo shows; lives in Florida and operates a marina with his new wife.
Lisa Germano: There's a biography here: <http://www.4ad.com/artists/germano/biog.htm> (no mention of her history with JM) Lisa is a solo artist in her own right and has had several album releases. Discography: <http://www.evo.org/html/group/germanolisa.html>
John Cascella: Sadly, on November 14, 1992, he was found dead in his car in Indiana. It is believed that he died of a heart attack.
David Grissom: He joined Mellencamps band in 1991, and left in 1993 to join the now disbanded "Storyville".
Q9 What's the story behind "Grandma's Theme" off the
Scarecrow album?
A9 John's grandmother, Laura, sings the song. It is an
excerpt from an American folk song called "The Baggage Coach Ahead". The song's origins have been traced to about 1885. The author remains un-credited.
Q10 Ive seen an album called "Skin it Back" (Giffin Records) on a discography. What is that, and where can I get one?
A10 This album was never made. Johns first manager, Tony DeFries, owns the rights to "Chestnut Street Incident" and "The Kid Inside". "Skin it Back" was going to be a re-release of the material on these two albums. Mr. DeFries was also going to release some of the David Bowie recordings in the same way on the Griffin label; however, this didnt happen either. Then, Johns first two records were re-released in the U.S. last year on the Red Snapper label. Unfortunately, a few different music-cataloging services got the notice of the planned release and added the title to their catalogs before realizing it was never made.
Q11 Where can I find the lyrics to "Farewell Angelina" and "In My Time of Dying" off of Rough Harvest?
A11 Here: <http://www.mellencamp.com/album> and here <http://members.aol.com/moocpa/jmpage.html>

As he explained, "In the Thirties, Rural Electrification brought electricity to farmers and other rural dwellers for the first time in their lives, and along with that electricity came radios and record players: Music! LIST HISTORY: This list was created in early April, 1995, by Tony Buechler with the help of Chad Harvey. It was created as a successor of the Mellencamp Digest that was run by David Ambrose. David also created an excellent Mellencamp homepage which was later integrated with Tony's Mellencamp Homepage into www.mellencamp.com. The list has moved around the internet to different addresses and hosts.
Columbia Records has since hired Tony Buechler as the administrator of the Official John Mellencamp page. http://www.mellencamp.com
REMEMBER: Human Wheels is a moderated mailinglist, which means to post to the list your message must be approved by one of the list moderators. If your message doesn't contain any Mellencamp content, it might not be approved.
NETIQUETTE: SENDING A POST TO THE LIST IN ALL CAPS IS NOT ONLY DIFFICULT TO READ, IT DENOTES YELLING. Please refrain from this practice.
Any personal replies should be directed to the original sender, and not to the list. Most of the time, it is unnecessary to include the entire content of the post you are replying to. Think before you post, is a good rule to follow. For instance: are you posting something that the majority of the people on the list want to read? Heres an informative site, which specifically addresses email/discussion list etiquette: <http://lists.aiesec.org/info/netiquette.html>

Q5 Does John read the list mail?
A5 Not likely.
Q6 Is it OK to discuss/review bootlegs, do tape trading, etc. on the Human Wheels list?
A6 Certainly. Any person-to-person haggling of details of trades should be done via personal email though, just to keep the list volume down. In other words, if you want to trade tapes, send an email to the Human Wheels list to that effect, and then handle the actual trading via personal email.
Q7 Where can I find a Mellencamp home page on the www?
A7 <http://www.mellencamp.com> is the Official John Mellencamp site. Tony Buechler, who is the administrator of the Human-Wheels mailinglist, is the webmaster of that site.
