RMI Society

The population of the Marshall Islands is about 52,000. The majority of people live on Majuro and Kwajalein atolls. Half of the population is under the age of 15. Family planning programs have begun and are seeing some changes.

The Marshallese are a soft-spoken people who are very good-natured and generous. Despite the Western influence, the Marshallese cling tightly to their traditions, and social status is still determined by one's kinship. The influence of the West can be seen in the Marshallese dress, however, women tend to keep their knees covered.

Basketball is the most popular sport, but there are many Marshallese games in which the children participate.

Due to missionary work in the mid-1800's, much of the Marshallese ancient religious beliefs and practices have been left for Protestant forms of worship. Within the Protestant heading, there are several sects or denominations. These include Congregationalist, Assembly of God, Baptist, Seventh-Day Adventist, and Catholics. There is also a growing Mormon presence on the islands.

The Marshallese celebrate many holidays throughout the year. The list below details the holidays.
