Iotran Culture and Society

(Excerpted from A Concise guide to Cultures of the Republic by Meto Eliss, University of Bredelli)

Hailing from the planet Iotra in the galactic frontier come the militaristic Iotrans. At a point in their past the Iotran people must have had great world wars because every nation on the planet has vast, well trained armies. This would also explain why a species of their intelligence level has yet to develop hyperspeed engines. There are several nations on the planet, a total of 112 to be exact. All of these nations have the same basic language, though local dialects abound. The political system in all of these nations is very similar also. While specifics differ, the major ruling body is the military. Even though, every nation has a huge military it is unlikely war will ever break out on Iotra. Due to a complex set of treaties, if anything more than border disputes or trade disagreements break out it will draw the entire planet into war, and none want this to happen. First contact was made with the Iotrans seventy-five years ago by a republic scouting vessel. After brief negotiations with leaders from every nation Iotra was made an independent commonwealth of the Republic with the option of full membership at anytime. The two biggest nations, who happen to border each other, set aside a small part of land in between them as property of the republic, and Republic City was built there. All contact with the rest of the galaxy is through Republic City. Since contact with the republic two major changes have happened in Iotran society. First was all the nations of Iotra signed an external threat treaty. Basically all this treaty did was make it so that in the event that Iotra was attacked from an external (non-Iotran) threat, then all feuds, embargos, and disputes would immediately desist and all of Iotra would combine into one military to defeat the threat. Second, was the formation of the Bracemen council. With the founding of Republic City and the building of a spaceport, the Iotrans started to experience intergalactic crime. To help curb this the Iotran nations founded the Bracemen council. The council is made up of a representative from each nation. The council decides who becomes a Braceman and how the Bracemen resources are allocated. A few Bracemen have gotten in trouble in other parts of the galaxy, because they pursue a criminal who broke a law on Iotra without regard to any local or galactic laws. Iotrans are becoming more prevalent in the galaxy. Just recently Kinlandrin Kingdom has been recruiting Iotrans for an elite fighting force. What the purpose this army, or what impact it will have on history has yet to be determined. To conclude, Iotran society, in a Kadu nutshell, is a very military oriented (yet civilized) society that is a bit isolationistic, but shows promise of becoming an important part of the galactic community.
