"A Place In Time"

by: Marcia Rice Fleetwood

Deborah Acres lay quietly and completely paralyzed. In her mind she was screaming out, yet not one muscle would so much as twitch of her command.
It was the old woman! The witch! She had put something in the soothing, hot herbal tea!
And for what perverse reason had she wanted her victim powerless? Deborah could feel his presence. She could hear his sigh like breathing, and feel the heat of it.
Lindall Varney found himself feeling a great pleasure watching the young woman sleeping. She resembled a still life, wet with the aroma of fresh oil medium.
'How long had it been?' He asked himself, 'Two years, maybe three, since he had felt the want of a woman's body?'
Of course, there were always resorts like Peg Littleton's girls. They were well educated in pleasuring men for profit.
Lindall had never felt the need to be entertained by their promiscuity, but he flavored the thought they were available if his need became unbearable.
He ached for the beautiful woman stretched out across his bed.
It had been empty for too long, but what chance would a backwoods country hick have with her city style sophistication?
He could never risk the hurt and humiliation of asking and was too much of the gentleman to take. So he watched her. Taking along with his eyes.
Nearly a hundred miles had passed since Deborah Akers bid goodbye to her older sister Kathy.
Kathy had taken up the fascinating hobby of searching for thier family's roots. Genealogy. An undertaking that was
becoming more of an obsession for her sister rather than a simple hobby.
When reliable leads suggested she continue searching nearly three hundred miles away from their Chicago home,
Kathy's husband insisted she had no business travelling into Kentucky and Southern Indiana alone. Kathy made the trip
sound too exciting for Deborah to refuse.
Deborah Akers worked in the corporate office for the chain luxurious and expensive hotels, "le Grandis'. She was
secured to the president of the company, Mr. Thomas Kinsey, by her incredible marketing skills and unerring results. He
never made an executive decision without first consulting her opinion. She knew her worth as his personal adviser, and
her position among the corporate family was rock solid. She had been with him six years.
She often reminded herself of her humble beginnings as the coffee girl for their major competitor. Though she had
obtained a degree in marketing while at that firm, convincing her employer and coworkers to take her seriously was next
to impossible. Once a go-fer, always go-fer. Deborah sought employment elsewhere.
She had orriginally been hired by le Grandis, they believing she had knowledge of her competitors marketing
strategies. Though she did not, she was able to bluff her way into a head position. By the time the president of the
company figured her out she had already impressed him with her expertise and sharp professional insight . He
immediately bumped her to Executive Marketing Advisor and gave her an office next to his with the jest, he felt he
needed to keep a keen eye on her for fear she might set her sights on his job.
She gave a final tug at the too short hemline of her pale gray skirt before knocking on his door.
In all her six years she had been too busy to take time off for any reason. Since the fourth of July had come and gone,
and there were no other holidays close at hand, or special events to plan for, her request for a vacation should be
accepted well.
"Time off!" Thomas Kinsey screeched. "I gave Ira three days to settle business in Indianapolis, and he phoned to tell me he wasn't coming back! Time off! I can't afford to lose two executives!"
