How They Were - In My Room How They Were - In My Room

I was like most of America, the first thing I heard of Depeche Mode was "People Are People". Being as active as I was in anti-racist action, the lyrics stood out to me. (So we're different colors and we're different creeds/different people have different needs/it's obvious you hate me though I've done nothing wrong/I've never even met you so what could I have done) Now, I won't be all self-righteous and say "I fell in love at that moment" because I didn't. I was into other types of music, but I did always keep the People Are People CD handy. No other album they had "moved me" immensely, until Songs of Faith and Devotion, in 1993.

Songs of Faith and Devotion was my turning point. I only got the live version and only because I tend to prefer live music. Dave Gahan's powerful voice and strong lyrics seem to grow (still) every time I hear this CD. I still consider "in your room", my favorite Depeche Mode song. Even though Rolling Stone called it "the most devoid rock-n-roll tour, ever". After following their history (especially Dave Gahan's) and watching their triumphs and tragedies, I'm hooked on Depeche Mode for life!
