He thought he got out of the castle without anyone noticing but he was wrong. As Garrett walked through the forest, he could hear Nikki yelling after him.
"Garrett, wait up! Garrett!" Garrett turned around to see nikki running up to him. She stopped next to him, put her hands on her knees, and tried to catch her breath. "Geez, how do you guys do all this running? I've never been good at physical stuff."
Garrett grinned. "Well, what is it that had you run all the way out here?"
She looked at him. "I wanted to make sure you were okay. You haven't said a thing this entire time. I mean, she was your betrothed and you are just letting her go! You haven't put up a bit of a fight. I know it's not because you don't feel anything for her, I can see that you do by the look in your eyes everytime she comes near."
"I-uh-well, um-if you want the truth…" Garrett's voice lowered to a near-whisper. "I think maybe Rohan would be better for her."
Nikki looked at him in utter shock. "You think Rohan would be better for her! You're kidding!" Garrett's face indicated he wasn't. Nikki turned around and yelled "Okay, will the real Garrett please come out now!" All Nikki could see is a squirrel staring at them.
"I'm serious, Nikki," Garrett said. Nikki turned and faced him. "I've watched how the two of them look at each other. I've been here for months now, and no matter how close I seemed to be getting with Deirdre, nothing could compare with how she felt for Rohan. You know, when I first came to Kells I even confronted her about it. She refused to marry me even though we've been betrothed for all of her life. I asked her if it was because of Rohan, she just turned away and never answered me. And now, with the situation changing so quickly and Deirdre is now betrothed to Rohan……well, she's not putting up a fight like she did with me. Hell, if it was anyone but Rohan, she'd be fighting it all the way."
"Do you love her?" Nikki asked.
"Excuse me?!" Garrett asked with a shocked look on his face.
"Do you love her?" Nikki pressed.
"I-uh…"
"Garrett! Nikki!" Garrett and Nikki turned to see Deirdre and Rohan approaching. "You have to come quick! The castle is being attacked!"
The four were in sucha rush to get back to the castle they never even noticed the squirrel standing rigth next to them until Nikki literally tripped over it.
Nikki hit the ground pretty hard. "Oww!" she said. "What the hell did I trip ov-" Nicola flipped herself over to see the squirrel growing larger. It started to have foam come out of its mouth.
Nikki scrambled up and ran to the mystic Knights who all had their weapons drawn and ready.
The now-giant squirrel approached the Mystic Knights.
Deirdre fired a couple of shots with her crossbow. Nothing happened.
"Here let me try," Garrett said. He brougth his hands together and said "Twin Timber Axes!" His secomd ax magically appearred. Garrett brought his axes together and fired a shot. Still nothing happened.
By now, the squirrel seemed pissed. Rohan fired a couple of shots with his sword, then the four made a run for it.
The squirrel started to run faster until the Mystic Knights found themselves backed into a cave.
"Let's call our armor," Rohan said. "Fire within me!"
"Air above me!"
"Forest before me!"
The armor clad Knights all attacked the squirrel. Deirdre went to kick it when the squirrel moved and bit her unprotected leg.
"Oww!" Deirdre screamed. She fell to the ground and clutched her leg.
"Deirdre!" Rohan screamed. Rohan charged forward, sword drawn, and ran the giant squirrel through. The squirrel disappearred in a bust of green dust.
Now that the battle was over, the Knights armor disappearred. Everyone ran to Deirdre. "Deirdre, are you all right?" they asked.
"Yeah, I'm okay," she said. She tried to stand up only to fall to the ground clutching her leg. "I can't walk," she said, her voice laced with pain.
"Nicola, is there anything you can do for her?" Rohan asked, the worry in his voice obvious.
"There's nothing I can do here. We need to take her to Cathbad. He'll have the herbs needed to heal her. Unfortunately, even with the proper herbs, I would say she'll not be fighting any battles anytime soon."
Garrett spoke up. "We need to be getting back to the castle now. I doubt Angus and Ivar are going to be able to hold off the Temrans for long. Dagda knows the castle guard won't be any help.
"Right," Rohan said. "Let's go." He stooped over and picked Deirdre up, then the four of them headed back to the castle.
"Shit!" Maeve said. "That stupid squirrel didn't get Rohan like he was supposed to. I'm just going to have to hope Tyrune gets him when they get back to the castle."
"Well, my queen, by taking down Deirdre the Rabid Squirrel of Temra did something even better than taking out Rohan," Tork said, bowing to Maeve.
"How do you figure," she snarled at him.
"When Rohan sees his precious Deirdre is dying, he won't have the will to live anymore. And not only that, but I would say the same goes with Garrett. Both would die for the woman they love," he said simply.
"Oh, please," Maeve said. "No one, not even those goody-two-shoe Mystic Knights would die just because they loved someone. No one could be that stupid."
"I would," Tork muttered.
"What did you say?"
"Oh, nothing my queen."
