"Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me" by Heydon Buchanan

"Love, Joy, Laughter, Acceptance. These were the most important gifts that Bernice and her son shared in their long-term caregiving journey through Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in their ultimate victory. This is an account of a long and varied caregiving experience. The many lessons learned can be of value to caregivers of every type, and their supporters, in the challenges they face.

People who can benefit most by reading this book-- * Babyboomers who now face, or could be facing, parental caregiving. * Primary, solitary, and supplementary caregivers for all afflictions. * Clergymen, physicians, therapists, social workers, and other personal counselors who are assisting caregivers, disease victims, and additional family members. * Families facing nursing home placement. * Families in crisis while dealing with the effects of a disabled loved one.

Alzheimer's disease in the U.S. could grow to sixteen million victims by the year 2050 according to the Alzheimer's Association. Every family will be affected. Drugs cannot cure AD and have very limited benefit at all. Families Must learn to honestly face the disease."

The above quote is taken from the back cover of Heydon's book. He sums it up much better than I could. My husband and I met Heydon and his wife, Nancy, while Bernice was in a nursing home. We knew of some of his experiences from that point on. We knew that Heydon was writing this book. I was excited to find that it has now been published and is available through amazon.com. I highly recommend this book for everyone. To find out more and obtain your copy, please go to amazon.com

"Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals" by Susan Berg

Activity professionals will want to have multiple coplies of this book because it will be enjoyed by so many

Though many books have been written about Alzheimer's disease, there are none published like this one. Several factors set this book apart from the rest. First, large, color photographs of adorable babies doing cute, conversation stimulating things are presented in such a way as to maximize the attention of memory impaired persons. Second, activity ideas related to these photos are presented in an easy to do, yet mind stimulating format. Third, there is wealth of useful information offered.

After reading the section about how to use this book and the segment discussing maximizing positive relationships with the memory challenged, anyone will be able to share this book with a memory impaired person, effectively.

The portion explaining strategies for running a successful group will give the professional, at the very least, many good ideas.

The resource pages are extensive and well thought out.

In short, there is something for everyone who has dementia or is concerned about someone who does.

Here is what Dr Paul Raia Director of Patient Care and Family Support of the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter had to say about this book: 'In light of recent research, activities should take on a whole new dimension in long-term care. Activities can no longer be thought of as leisure time fillers, but rather, as opportunities to provide mental stimulation. If done thoughtfully, activities can help those with Alzheimer's disease hold on to their remaining cognitive skills longer and enhance mood. In a word, activities should be "therapeutic". Susan Berg's book is a treasure-trove of therapeutic activities that can bring joy and purpose to those with a cognitive impairment.'

Also Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Flash Cards are 8.5x11 inch cards with the adorable baby photo on the front and the idea suggestions on the back of the card. and are now available as well. These are ideal for use with a larger group or for those folks who want to hold onto their favorite photo. These are ideal for groups running concurrently.
