FOOTBALL SIGNEES

Purdue has signed 19 new players!!! February 3, 1999

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue football coach Joe Tiller has announced the signing of 19 student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent. The class features 11 defensive players and eight offensive players. There are five defensive ends, four linebackers, three wide receivers, two tight ends, one cornerback, one defensive lineman, one offensive lineman and one quarterback. "We wanted a defensive emphasis in this class, and that's what we got," Tiller said. "The linebacking corp is the strength of the class, if it's not the defensive line. All of these players have good speed at their positions. Offensively, we wanted to sign several receivers, plus a wide distribution of the other positions. I think we have helped ourselves across the board. Academically, about one-third of this group is really outstanding, about one-third is very good and one-third is very capable but will need to exhibit good discipline and work habits in order to be successful. "Overall, we went from sea to shining sea to recruit this class," Tiller added. "We are not sure if it will continue to that degree or not in future years, but we learned a lot from this recruiting experience. We went up against national-power programs for many of these kids. We won some, we lost some and we will be better in the future because of it." Geographically-speaking, the recruits hail from 11 different states: four from Texas; three from California; two each from Florida, Illinois and Louisiana; and one each from Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, New Jersey and Ohio.

On Tuesday Dec. 29th our football team beat 4th ranked Kansas State 37-34. It was a great game in a great city I was there and was proud to see how many Purdue fans made the trip it was between 15,000 or 20,000. Purdue's defense was my players' of the game.!! they caused 4 Michael Bishop interceptions!! He had only had 4 the whole year! Purdue was leading 17-7 at half. Though we only won by 3 this game was dominated by Purdue we could have won by two or three scores if the punt team didn't screw up. After KSU scored a late TD with 1:25 left our offense came out and drove the ball 80 yards for a TD pass to Isaac Jones. Here is a picture of that catch!!!
