MARYLAND
In the records of the State, mention is made of the marriage of Frances, d/o Wm. Innis of Somerset co. to Thomas Poynter abt. the year 168o, and in "Maryland Wills" reference is made of Thomas & Frances Poynter.
VIRGINIA
Wm. Poynter of VA was a Lt. in the Amercian Revolution, 1776, and was also in military service 178o
MASSACHUSETTS
Poynters were living in Falmouth, Mass in 1775
KENTUCKY
Branches of the family located in Indiana, Nebraska and various eastern States trace their lineage back to a KY stem, but the exact relation between these various families has never been definitely established.
It seems to be a common tradition of each, however, that they spring from Huguenot stock which escaped to England from France during the persecution of the Sect for their religous beliefs.
INDIANA
One branch of the family in this State traces its origin back to (Edmund?) Poynter who came from Edinborough, Scotland, while still a small boyy and settled in KY. Later he married a widow Ray, and the result of this union were the sons Thomas, Jonathan (blind), Mathew and Edward the youngest. The above may not prove to be authentic, but is from Mrs Orlena (Poynter) Smock, living in Inpls, in 1917, remembering the family history as learned in her childhood.
