Disney's Top Competitors

The Walt Disney Company is one of the most dominant forces in media and entertainment today, but the company is not a monopoly. It is, however, the one of the largest media companies, second only to Time Warner. Above are listed some of The Walt Disney Company's fiercest competitors. Please click on the company images in order to view further information on the competiton. For specific relevant comparison, the following is relevant business information on The Walt Disney Company.

How does Disney compare?
The Walt Disney Company is the world's second-largest media conglomerate, after Time Warner. The company has interests in TV and movie production (including Buena Vista Motion Pictures Group, Buena Vista Television, and Miramax Film), theme parks (including Animal Kingdom, Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, Epcot Center, and North America's most-visited theme park, the Magic Kingdom), publishing companies (Disney Press, Hyperion Press, and Mouse Works), a cruise line, Internet search engines (Infoseek), and professional sports franchises (The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim hockey team). Disney's ABC Inc. division includes the ABC TV network, several dozen TV stations, and shares in five cable channels, including ESPN.

1998 Disney sales in millions totaled $22976.0, the highest 1998 sales among Disney, the News Corporation, Time Warner, and Viacom. The company does not lead, however, in annual growth. Disney currently possesses a one year growth rate of 2.2%. This is considerably less than Time Warner's 32.1%, the News Corporation's 19.7%, and even Viacom's 9.9% rate. Disney's slower annual growth rate is most likely due to the fact that, as an established company, it is focusing on exapnding within on issues such as quality and sales revenue more than it is focusing on outside expansion by acquiring other media companies. While Disney stands positioned to enter the next millenium as one of the most influential media forces in the world, its competition is slowly encroaching. Disney will continue to hold its ground in the industry, but not without plenty of healthy competition from Time Warner, the News Corporation, and Viacom.
