The One-Hundred Steps Cemetery

The One-Hundred Steps Cemetery dates back to the 1860’s and sits high on a grassy hill, thus all the steps leading up to it. It is located on County Road 675, west of the 340 jog on US Highway 40, to the west of Brazil, Indiana. The stories surrounding this cemetery are interesting indeed.

The story that has been told has you arriving at the old cemetery as midnight. After you get up the nerve to get out of the car and start your way to the graves, you are suppose to count the steps as you climb. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, however, since some of the steps have cracked from age, or have been over-grown with grass. Once you have managed to make your way to the top, however there is more than just physical exhaustion to take your breath away! The legend maintains that if you will turn and face the open field by the cemetery, especially if the moon is shining from that direction, a ghost will appear out of the misty moonlight. Without speaking a word, this ghost, said to be the cemetery’s first undertaker, will reveal a vision to you. It is a vision of your own death. Then the ghostly visitor from the other world will quietly disappear.

Your mission is not finished, however, for as you make your way back down the stairs, you are suppose to count the stairs back down to the bottom. If you count a different number on the way down, it is said that the vision of your death will come true. If you attempt to forgo the process of counting the stairs, and climb up or down the hill without using them, the undertaker is said to appear behind you and give you a shove, sending you tumbling down the hill.
