Meyer Meyer

Detective Second Grade. Son of Max and Martha Meyer. Grandparents (one grandmother's name was Rose) from Poland. Father Max, a tailor by trade, was not expecting a "change of life" baby, but Martha presented him with a son anyway. Max Meyer, ever the joker, named the newborn "Meyer Meyer". Being Orthodox Jews in a Gentile neighborhood was trying enough, but having a "double-barreled monicker" made life exceptionally difficult for young Meyer. Early on, he learned the art of patience. The one visible effect of a lifetime's repression: Meyer is completely bald at his perpetual age of 37.

Before graduating high school, Meyer took up weight lifting to keep his body in shape. He took a job pumping gasoline to earn spending money. In 1940, he graduated from law school, making him the highest-educated man on the squad. He served four years in WWII, then joined the police force upon completion of his duty.

Married to the former Sarah Lipkin, he is the father of three children: Jeff, Susie, and Alan. Meyer is as much a family man as Hawes is a bachelor. The Meyer family lives in an old, rent-controlled apartment on Concord. He owns two cars: a "beat-up Chevy", and a used Mercedes. The thought of what people might think of his owning a German car crosses his mind, but does not linger. His conscience is clear.

His birth took place at home, rather than in a hospital.

Which is the way it should be.

He does not like hospitals, because his mother died in one.
