Kling

Bertram A. Kling

Detective Third Grade, Shield #74579. Native of Riverhead; his boyhood home is either on Cannon Road or Forrest Road in that borough. His parents are deceased. He was raised by a father who instilled racial equality in his son. When we first met Kling, he was a 24 year-old patrolman. After solving the Jeannie Page case in The Mugger, he was promoted to Detective Second.

He is a Korean War veteran. His blond, youthful good looks make him a natural in the oft-used "Mutt and Jeff" routine. His athletic ability allows him to play second base on the interdepartmental baseball team. He wears #13 on a blue and white jersey for games. When he's on the telephone, he doodles.

He fell in love with Claire Townsend in The Mugger, then lost her to an act of violence in Lady, Lady, I Did It. Their romance is detailed particularly well in Give the Boys a Great Big Hand. His love life continues to be disastrous: Cindy Forrest enters his life in Ten Plus One, but he loses her to a doctor in Sadie When She Died. On the 9th of November of an unspecified year, he marries Augusta Blair, a red-headed model who is as beautiful as Bert is handsome. Their marriage ends in Heat. Then he took up with someone closer to home - Detective Eileen Burke. Bert's profound emotions chased her away. Currently (as of Romance) seeing Dr. Sharyn Cooke, a Deputy Chief Surgeon.
