Chapter 16

Only moments after collapsing on my living room couch, someone knocked on my backdoor. I knew who it probably was though. I got up, walked over to the back door, and opened it to see Taylor. I gave him a weak smile and let him in. Overlooking his wardrobe I admired how awesomely he dressed for a guy his age. He was dressed in a short sleeved red shirt, gray baggy cargo shorts, some chokers, and sandals strapped to his feet. He smiled at me and stood there as I closed the door behind him.

"I went to visit my mom at the hospital today." I reported.

"How did it go?" he asked following me into the kitchen where he sat on one of the stools next to the counter top.

"Well, I didn’t see her exactly," I told him looking down. "I couldn’t bare to see her in a bed with tubes sticking in and out of her like that. I just couldn’t stand the thought of her still hating me. So I kind of just ran out of there and Isaac saw me walking home and gave me a ride."

"Oh," Taylor put his hands in his lap. "I’m sorry. Was she in bad condition?"

"Well, sort of. It looked like she was sleeping or something, but I just didn’t want to bring myself to the reality that she may be deathly ill." I confessed.

"I understand, but if she is you may not a have that much time with her left."

"I know I know. It’s just so hard, Taylor," I sat beside him now. "I know my aunt is going to hate me even more now."

"No one hates you, Janie. Why would they? You didn’t do anything!"

I gave him a worried glance and started playing with a pen cap by the phone where I was sitting. I sighed heavily.

"I try to tell myself that, but I can’t seem to convince myself that it wasn’t my fault. That’s why it’s so hard for me to see her."

"Do know for sure that she hates you?" he asked me.

That was a good question. I had never thought about that before.

"Well, no."

"See, then you should try to go back and talk to her." Taylor told me.

"I can’t . . ."

"Yes, you can," he urged me. "Hey next you go, I’ll go with you then, ok? You just tell me when."

I looked at him. Taylor gave me one of the sweetest looks he had ever given me before. I just threw my arms around him and embraced him in a hug.

"Thank you so much, Taylor. What would I do without you?"

"Well, I can’t answer that one for ya, but I can promise you that I will always be here for you," Taylor said as I let go of him.

He squeezed my hand for a second and then backed away, leaning against the counter.

"Same for you."

Then it was just quiet because we both wanted to get off of this topic. Taylor leafed through the pile of untouched papers on the counter until he pulled a pink sheet out. My heart suddenly stopped at the sight of it. For some reason I was getting a bad feeling from just looking at it. He gave it to me and as the thin piece of paper lay against my fingertips I shuddered.

"You going to that?" Taylor asked me.

"Uh . . ." I couldn’t even talk as I read the title of the flyer.

It said, Howling Moon Nightclub. Grand Opening Tonight!

I swallowed hard. Something wasn’t right with this. I just could sense it. Despite the fact that it was bringing my slayer powers back full force, they also told me that there were some bad vibes coming from this place. I can’t explain it. The slayer just can sense things that no normal human could. I sat there in my daze totally not noticing that Taylor was talking to me.

"Janie! Janie!" Taylor said.

He touched my hand and my head jerked up as if he surprised me. Taylor gave me a worried and confused look.

"Yeah, I uh what?"

"Are you ok? You were like out of it for a couple of seconds," Taylor smiled.

I blushed. He probably thought I was insane or something.

"Yeah dude I’m fine!" I reassured him. "Um what did u ask me?"

"I asked you if you were going to that club."

"Oh no! That’s just," I stopped myself and got up. "Taylor I have to do something so maybe you should go."

I tried to sound as less pushy as possible but it was rather difficult.

He gave me an odd look as he too got up and started walking towards the door.

"Are you sure you’re ok Janie?" he asked me again noticing my weird reaction.

"Uh, yeah, Taylor, I’m fine," I opened the door for him and he turned around as I said, "Hey do me a favor, Taylor."

"What?"

"Don’t go to that club ok?" I tried to tell him.

I just hoped he wouldn’t ask any questions.

"Um, alright. I can’t anyways tonight. I have to baby sit for Mackenzie and Zoe while my parents take Jessica and Avery shopping." He told me.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

"Ok good. Call me later ok?"

"Alright bye." Taylor started to jog away as I waved and then shut the back door.

I had some major preparing to do. I hadn’t gone on a watch, as I called it, since last year. I didn’t ever want to again, but I now I decided I had to. This was my job, as much as I did not want to except it I had to. I was born with this gift and destined to fight vampires and the more I kill the more will come. So I will forever be doing this until . . . well, I get killed myself. I didn’t really care if I died though just as long as everyone around me that I love is safe. That’s all I care about.

I put on my "exercising outfit" again and went downstairs to work out. My muscles were still pretty stiff and I hadn’t practiced for a while and tonight I had feeling that I was going to need it.

Around 7 that night, an hour before the club opened I changed into a pair of tight leopard print flared pants over my black combat boots, and a black tank top. I went to my room and got a medium sized box out of my closet and hesitantly opened it. I hadn’t opened this box since Lisa died and it brought back memories to just see all of this stuff again. Taking out a sharp stake, a small bottle of holy water and then retrieving my Chinese stars from the basement, I stuffed them in small hidden pockets of my leather jacket. Looking myself over I felt ready and almost pumped up you could say. I only liked one thing about slaying and that was the feeling of kicking a vampire’s ass and turning them to dust. I smiled to myself. Yes, in a way I did miss it, but I still hated doing it.

All of a sudden my doorbell rang. I frowned thinking who it could be. Running to the main hall I opened the front door to see Isaac. I gave him an impatient smile, as he looked me over wondering why I was so dressed up.

"Hi Isaac what are you doing here?" I asked politely.

"Hey, well, I was wondering if you heard about that new night club?"

"Yeah I heard of it. The Howling Moon right?" I gulped and my stomach grumbled nervously just saying the word.

"Would you uh," he swallowed hard and ran a hand through his hair, "like to go there with me?"

"Um, Isaac, I can’t, I have to do something really important tonight," I lied some what.

He looked down but still managed a smile.

"Listen though that place is supposed to be really bad though so please don’t go there," I begged giving him the puppy dog eyes.

"Why?"

"Just don’t go, for me," I batted my eyelashes not too obviously though.

He sighed and then gave up.

"Alright then, I won’t. Where are you going?" he asked me as I walked past him and shut the door.

"Nowhere important. I have to take care of some business." I told him as I walked to my car.

"Ok, see ya later then," Isaac called to me as he got in his own and drove home.

I started my car and backed down the driveway nervously thinking about how I would handle this situation.

The closer I got to this place the worse my cramps got only proving that this place was pure evil.
