Chapter 7
- First Day on the Island"Ok guys we have to get organized here," Molly exclaimed standing up from her position on the sandy shoreline.
All of the boys stared at her, their faces starting to glow from the sun. She started to pace.
"I was thinking about something, "she started, "Wouldn’t you think there would be other survivors? I mean we couldn’t have been the only ones to land here especially if this was the way the current was going."
"Yeah," Scott agreed sitting up.
He had been lying down letting the water crash against his feet.
"But the current doesn’t matter in the ocean because there’s a little thing called waves," Zac replied.
"Oh, I didn’t think of that. But still we CAN’T be the only ones," Molly said, her voice getting a little softer. "Can we?"
"I wouldn’t think so," Taylor added. "Maybe we should walk around the island."
"But what if help comes and we miss it," Scott argued Taylor’s word.
Zac looked at Scott. For some reason he could sense some competitiveness in Scott’s voice, but he didn’t say anything.
"Well then two of us will go and the rest will stay how about that?" Molly decided.
"That’s fine, I’m staying," Zac announced as he sat against the raft.
"I don’t think I can get up yet," Bob said a frown on his face.
"I’m going, "Molly said, "Who’s going with me?"
"I’ll go," Taylor and Scott both said at the same time.
Molly scrunched her eyebrows in surprise and Taylor and Scott evilly glanced at each other.
"You go, I should stay with my brother," Taylor politely said to Scott even though his intention was to get to know Molly better and he had a feeling that that’s what Scott was thinking too.
"Come on," Molly motioned for Scott to get up as she trotted off.
"We’ll be back before sundown."
The sun had started to settle on the horizon.
"Do you think Mom and Dad and the rest of them made it ok?" Zac asked after it was quiet and Bob had drifted off to sleep.
"I hope so. I bet they did," Taylor said reassuringly.
"How do you know?"
"Mom and Dad are fighters."
"Oh," Zac looked down as it got quiet again. "Taylor?"
"Yeah." Taylor was staring down on the yellow sand; drawing letters in it and throwing handfuls into the water.
"We’re going to make it through this right?" Zac looked at his older brother worriedly.
Taylor sighed and thought that it best to stay rational but not get his little brothers hopes up. "Of course we will, Zac. Just don’t worry about it."
"Don’t worry?" Zac retorted. "It’s kind of hard not to worry at this point."
"I know Zac," Taylor looked up at the palm trees behind him hoping Molly and Scott didn’t get lost.
"I’m going to try to dream all of this away." Zac said lying down and rolling over on his side.
"That’s the best thing you could do right now," Taylor whispered to him as he leaned against the trunk of the tree.
"We should probably gather some firewood you think?" Molly asked Scott.
"Yeah, good idea." Scott agreed as he started picking up little branches and twigs off of the tropical forest floor.
Molly did the same as they walked down the beach. So far there was no sign of civilization.
"What are we going to do if no one ever finds us?" Scott wondered aloud.
"I don’t know." Molly replied walking steadily.
"I hope my parents and my other brothers are ok," Scott added trying to start a conversation.
"Yeah."
Scott grimaced. She wasn’t as easy to talk to as he had hoped.
"Are you worried at all?"
Molly glanced at Scott. "Well, for some reason, I’m not at all. I don’t know maybe I’m still in shock, but I think we’ll survive this."
Scott nodded in agreement. "This couldn’t be an uncharted island could it?"
Molly’s lips smiled in a way that made Scott want her even more. "Maybe. I don’t know. I kind of like the thought of being on an island alone, away from my parents."
"But you’re not alone," Scott replied, "you’re surrounded by a group of boys and these forest animals here."
Molly forced a stifled laugh. "Yeah, what could be better huh?"
Scott grinned. "I guess we should be getting back now before it gets dark."
"Good idea," Molly agreed as they turned around, bundles of firewood in their arms.
They returned to see Bob and Zac both asleep on the sand. Taylor had a lighter that he was playing with, moving his fingers through the flame, back and forth.
"Taylor, we could use that lighter! Don’t waste the fluid," Molly told him as she dropped the wood in front of him.
"Sorry," Taylor shrugged as Molly grabbed his lighter from him.
He didn’t try to argue because he knew that she had her ways.
It almost completely dark when they finally got a fire started.
"What are we going to eat?" Scott wondered.
"I dunno," Taylor replied as he sighed and lay down in the sand on his back.
"Figure it out we’re going to be here for a while," Molly told him. "I’m not hungry."
She curled up by the fire staring across the flames at Taylor who was looking back at her. Scott noticed and became envious. He lay against a log made of a broken palm tree and watched the fire go out as everyone around him fell asleep. He decided to keep the fire going all night.
