Chapter 1: Sweet Beginings

February of '95

It was 10:00 AM. Colleen couldn't wait. Her parents didn't let her call any of her friends until ten. As soon as the clock chimed ten times, she picked up the phone and dialed Taylor, her best friends number. They were going up to Garden City.

"Hello?" asked the sleepy voice on the other line.

"Hey Isaac. Is Tay there?" she asked, perky as ever.

"Gosh, when did you have this much energy at this time of the morning?" Isaac joked.

"Well, Tay and I are going up to Garden City to rollerblade. It should be fun."

"Well, have fun." Isaac said and handed the phone off to Taylor, who was sitting right next to him.

"Colleen?"

"Yeah?" she answered.

"So are you coming up here, or am I going down there?" Taylor asked.

"Um, let's see. Isn't it faster if you come down here?"

"Yeah. I'll be there in a sec. I have to finish my cereal."

"Okay, see you."

"Bye." They hung up the phone. Taylor ran around the house, looking for his rollerblades and shoes. He sat down and made the world record for finishing a bowl of cereal and ran out the door.

"Taylor, where are you going?" he mother, Diana, called out.

"I'm going to Colleen's." He called out and ran down to her house. It was only down the street, though, it was a long street. Finally, Taylor made it up to Colleen's front steps. Just as he was about ready to ring the doorbell, Colleen opened the door.

"Hey, wanna come in for a sec?" she asked.

"Sure. But then we have to leave. The movie starts at 11:25 and to get good seats we need to be there by 11:00 and it takes forever to get to Garden City. Even on rollerblades." Taylor said, stepping into the spacious foyer. He stood there as Colleen went to her room and grabbed her shoes and a jacket, just in case. Plus money from her jar. She ran down the stairs to see Taylor smiling at her.

"What?" she asked. He just shook his head. They went out to her front porch and put on their rollerblades. Taylor and Colleen took off down the street.

"Hey, I'll race ya." Taylor said, speeding down the street.

"Taylor! That's not fair. You know I can't rollerblade that fast." She said as she struggled to catch up to him. Finally he slowed down and they headed for the movie theater together.

"You know, our birthdays are next month. We'll be thirteen. Whaddaya gonna get me?" Colleen asked, smiling.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?!?!? Come on, I'm getting you the...." she stopped herself.

"The what?" he asked, interested.

"Oh, nothing. But I might as well take it back, since you aren't getting me anything."

"Fine, I am getting you something, I just didn't want you to know." He frowned. Colleen poked him in the shoulder.

"That's okay. Come on, we'd better hurry." She said and they rollerbladed faster. They got there, and found seats, and watched the movie, threw popcorn at the screen, and went to McDonalds and now are on their way back home.

"Hey, watch out for that..." Taylor started, talking about the unidentiful object on the street. Colleen began to trip on it and Taylor grabbed her arm and held her up.

"Thanks." Colleen said. "You can let go of my arm now." She said.

"I want to make sure you don't fall." Taylor said, still holding on to her forearm. Colleen gave him a weird look but continued on. They decided to go back to Colleen's house and watch a movie. They threw their shoes and rollerblades by the front door and went up to Colleen's parents bedroom. Her parents weren't home and weren't going to be for a while. Colleen laid on her stomach after she put on the movie they had picked. Taylor sat down next to her. After a little bit, Taylor began to take tiny sections of Colleen's hair and braid it.

"Tay, what are you doing?" she asked.

"Playing with your hair." He answered.

"Okay, Taylor. You are my best friend, but, I think you're turning weird on me."

"No I'm not." Colleen turned over on her back. Taylor smiled and slowly bent down. Their lips met. After Taylor had a quick taste of her lips, he pulled away.

"Taylor, why did you do that?" Colleen asked in a whisper.

"Well, that's what friends do." He replied.

"Not the kind of friends that we are." She said.

"Well, Isaac and his friend kiss. He says it's just to show the friendship."

"Are you sure they're not like going out?" she asked.

"They're not. Just friends. Been friends forever."

"Who, Jessie?" she asked.

"Yep. They kiss to keep their friendship solid." He said. Colleen looked confused and thought for a moment.

"Okay, I don't mind if we do it as long as it's just to show our friendship and nothing else."

"Okay. How often should we?"

"Should we what?" she asked.

"Kiss!!!" Taylor said as if it were obvious.

"Oh, I don't know. Whenever, I guess." Taylor smiled. Colleen turned back over on her stomach and proceeded to watch the movie. She began to think about her and Taylor's first kiss. It kind of tingled and felt good. Like a comfort. Taylor really wanted to be more than friends but he knew that she didn't want to be. He had to make up some excuse to let him kiss her. Taylor turned his head around so that his was in front of Colleen's. He again kissed her, only this time, she responded by kissing him back. This time, when Taylor pulled away, he was much more satisfied. He laid down on his stomach next to Colleen and finished watching the movie.

"I should go now." Taylor said after the movie was over.

"Okay."

"Walk me down." Taylor asked Colleen.

"Alrighty." She said and they got up off the bed and went down to the front door. Taylor picked up his rollerblades and went out to the front porch to put them on. Colleen stood next to him as he hoisted himself up and turned to her. He kissed her and waved as he rollerbladed down the sidewalk and down the street. He was going so fast, his heart soaring as he had finally kissed her. He was so excited that he didn't even see his brother walking down their driveway as he ran over him.

"Tay, what are you so happy for?" Isaac asked.

"Well, only because I made up an excuse and kissed Colleen." He replied, smiling.

"You kissed Colleen? Your best friend? What was the excuse, and for what?"

"Well, the excuse was for kissing her. I told her that that's what friends do and the she said that we weren't the kind of friends that did that and then I told her that you and Jessie kissed to keep your friendship solid and she said that we could kiss as long as it was only because we were friends."

"You told her that and she believed you?"

"Yep. I kissed her three times. I'm a dog, aint I."

"You sure are. Well, I'm going over to Jessie's house, and believe me, we don't kiss." Isaac said smiling. He walked down the street a little ways and went inside to his friend Jessie's house, who was a girl.

"Hey Jessie." Isaac said, walking into her house.

"Hi."

"You will never believe what Taylor did today."

"What?"

"Well, he's had this crush on his best friend..."

"Wait, she's a girl, right?"

"Yeah. Colleen. You know her."

"Oh yeah."

"Well, he kissed her today and made up this whole story about how friends kissed and we did, you know, kiss to keep our friendship tight or something and she said they could kiss as long as it meant they were friends."

"So, Taylor made up this whole thing just to be able to kiss Colleen, in which he likes and is also his best friend?"

"Yep."

"Geez, that kid."

The Next Day

Taylor dialed Colleen's number.

"Colleen?" he asked.

"Yeah?"

"Do you want to spend the night tonight?" (keep in mind that they are just BEST FRIENDS and kids still did that when they were that age.)

"Sure. Let me ask my mom." Taylor tapped his fingers as he waited for her to return.

"It's fine. When should I come over?"

"5:00, or in a half hour, I guess."

"Okay. See ya."

"Bye."

Colleen walked over to Taylor's house with her bag on her back. She noticed a car coming towards her and it started to slow down. Isaac's head stuck out the window as he stopped next to her.

"So, you're spending the night tonight?" Isaac asked raising his eyebrows.

"Yeah. Why are you acting weird?"

"I'm not. Well, bye."

"Bye." Colleen shook her head and continued walking to Taylor's house.

"Hey." Taylor said, letting Colleen into the house. They walked down to the basement to play Super Nintendo.

"Oh, Taylor." Colleen said rummaging through her bag. "I brought you something." She revealed a giant bag of red jellybeans. Taylor's eyes widened and he smiled really big.

"Wow!!! Thanks!" he said and took the bag from her, giving her a short, sweet kiss on the lips. She smiled and continued her face off on the SN.

"Taylor! We're leaving now. Stay out of trouble, you two." Taylor's dad called down.

"Okay, Dad."

"Let's watch a movie." Taylor suggested. (you do that too much)

"Okay, like what?"

"The Birds."

"Okay." Taylor got out the movie and placed himself on the couch next to her. After a little while into the movie, Taylor looked over at Colleen and sighed. She looked over, noticing that.

"Do you want to try something?" he asked.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, do you want to like," Taylor began to blush as he tried to explain, "kiss with tongues?" Colleen gave him a half disgusted face.

"Kissing with tongues?"

"Yeah."

"I don't know."

"Oh, come on. Please? For me?" Colleen studied her best friend's pleading. She had always wanted to try French kissing, as it's more popularly called, but never ever thought that Taylor would bring up trying it with her.

"Okay." Taylor smiled and leaned forward, but she pulled away.

"But, in a little bit. Not now."

"Why?" Taylor asked, wanting to kiss her right now.

"I don't know. Right now it doesn't feel right, it will in a couple of minutes." Taylor sat back and waited for the time he was able to kiss Colleen. Finally, after a couple of minutes, or what seemed like hours to Taylor, Colleen turned to him.

"Okay." She said. Taylor raised his eyebrows.

"Now?"

"Yes." Taylor leaned forward once more and let their lips touch. Just as he was about to open his mouth, he pulled away.

"What?" Colleen asked.

"Umm, how do you do it?" (oh please, just put your tongue in!)

"I don't know. I was hoping you'd show me."

"Okay, well, I'll just try something." Their lips met once again and this time, Taylor let his mouth open. Colleen felt this and opened her mouth too. Taylor, very very slowly, let his tongue move into hers and feel the roof of her mouth and her tongue. Taylor wanted to do more, but Colleen pulled away. He looked at her hopefully.

"So, how was it?" she asked.

"I liked it. How about you?" he asked.

"Well, it was fine."

"Could we do it more?"

"Right now?"

"If you want to."

"Well, I guess." Taylor smiled and went towards her again. He ran his tongue over her teeth this time. She got this tingly feeling inside each time Taylor touched her. Could it be possible that she wanted to be more that just friends? She wasn't sure but Taylor, however, was getting up the courage to ask her out. Colleen pulled away and they smiled at each other.

"I am so cold." Colleen said, a sudded shiver going down her back.

"I'll get you a blanket." Taylor said, getting up and retrieving two blankets.

"Thanks." she said as he handed her one and used the other for himself. They snuggled up next to each otoher and drifted off into sleep.

Isaac walked down the basement stairs to see if Colleen and Taylor wanted ice cream. He stopped as he saw them asleep. Colleen was on her side and Taylor's head rested on her hip. The tv screen was a bright blue.

"Awwe, how cute."

The next morning, Taylor was awake before Colleen. He tried waiting for her to wake up on her own, but grew bored. Finally, Taylor bent over and placed his lips on hers. Her eyes fluttered open and began to kiss Taylor back. As he tried working his tongue into her mouth, they heard someone coming down the stairs.

"Taylor? Are you guys awake yet?" Little Jessica, Taylor's seven year old sister, called out from the stairs. He quickly broke away from Colleen.

"Yeah."

"Well, Mom said that you guys should come up for breakfast now."

"Okay. You can leave now." Taylor said, not rudely. He smiled at Colleen and helped her up.

The next few days went by pretty much the same. They practiced kissing each other in their basements when their parents weren't home. But, one day,Colleen burst into Taylor's room and saw him naked.

"COLLEEN!!! GET OUT OF HERE!!" he yelled.

"Taylor, I've seen you naked before."

"Just get out!" he yelled.

"FINE!!!" she yelled and stood outside of the closed door.

"I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT..." Colleen started to cry and Taylor could hear it. "... WE'RE MOVING TO INDIANA. IN TWO WEEKS." she finished yelling. Everyone in the house could hear her. She ran down stairs, past Isaac who was standing at the bottom of the stairs and out the front door. She ran home crying. Taylor sat down on his bed and stared out the window. It faced the street and he could see Colleen running. He wanted to go after her and give her a hug and kiss her and ask her out, but he couldn't. He got dressed, walking around like a zombie, still in shock.

Finally, the day had come to move. Colleen and Taylor had not talked or seen each other since the day she announced the news. But their mothers talked on the phone a lot. At the moment, everyone was standing around in front of Colleen's house. Everyone being Colleen's whole family(six people) and Taylor's whole family(seven and a new born). They were about to leave. Taylor stood next to Colleen.

"I'll miss you." Taylor choked out.

"I'll miss you too." Taylor knew that this would be dangerous, but he didn't care. It was one of the last times he might see her. He gave her a cute pout and stepped closer, carefully placing his lips on hers. As their tongues began to touch, Taylor decided to make a move. He lightly touched her sides with his fingers and then carefully started wrapping his hands around her waist. Soon, their were spectators. Who knew what was running through their parents heads right now. Colleen grabbed Taylor's wrists and let herself out of his hold. She pulled away and looked at everyone watching. Both her and Taylor's faces were bright pink. Isaac was trying not to laugh. Colleen's brothers were totally disgusted. Finally, Colleen's family left and everyone but Taylor went home. He just stood there and thought. What would he do now? He could barely stand being without her when she was here. Now she was gone. Gone...gone...gone....gone...gone.
