William Aubrey Powell c.1838-90

William Aubrey Powell was born in Wales in about 1838. He emigrated to the U.S.A., settling in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1890.

He directed the Choral Society of Scranton. He was the first choirmaster and organist of the First Welsh Baptist Church in Scranton. He edited the Welsh language periodical Y Ford Gron.

In 1875 he produced Côr y Plant, a collection of Welsh hymns and songs for use in children's Sunday Schools. In this publication, many of his tunes were set to words by the Welsh Baptist Minister James Spinther James ("Spinther"), who had visited Pennsylvania.
