Ni ffurfiau allanol o un rhyw
Na dim defodau a roes Duw,
Nac 'wyllys dyn na gwaed, medd ef,
All godi enaid fynu i'r nef.
Ewyllys Duw, nid dysg na thrās
A'n crea yn etifeddion gras;
Ein geni ar ddelw
Crist Mab Duw
Yn ddynion newydd rasol ryw.
Yr Ysbryd Glān fel gwynt o'r nef
Ar feibion cnawd anadla ef,
A newid yr holl gnawdol fryd,
A'r dyn mewn dull o newydd dyd.
Ein henaid pan fywhair yn wir
A gwyd o gwsg marwolaeth hir;
Ac edrych wnawn ar bethau'r nef,
A moli Duw yn llon ein llef.

Tunes [MH 8888]: gwelir: O dan y ddeddf Enwaediad oedd |
Not outward forms of any kind
Nor any devotion God gave,
Nor the will of man nor blood, said he,
Can raise a soul up to heaven.
The will of God, not learning or descent
Makes us heirs of grace;
Our birth in the image
of Christ the Son of God
As new men of a gracious kind.
The Holy Spirit like wind from heaven
On the sons of flesh he blows,
And changes the whole fleshly mind,
And puts the man in a new manner.
Our souls when they are truly revived
And raised from the long sleep of death;
And look we shall on the things of heaven,
And praise God with our cheerful cry.
tr. 2016 Richard B Gillion |
Not all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has giv'n,
Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heav'n.
The sovereign will of God alone
Creates us heirs of grace
Born in the image
of his Son,
A new, peculiar race.
The Spirit, like some heav'nly wind,
Blows on the sons of flesh,
New-models all the carnal mind,
And forms the man afresh.
Our quickened souls awake, and rise
From the long sleep of death;
On heav'nly things we fix our eyes,
And praise employs our breath.
