Lisa's WLS Story

Lisa's Weight Loss Surgery Journal

November 10, 2000
Hi!
Well, what's new... let's see... Oh! I had the endoscope done on November 6th, and they didn't find anything new. I'm feeling better, and I've even stopped taking a few of the meds they had me on. I think it's all going to resolve itself without too much more trouble! Keep your fingers crossed! I asked about surgery to repair the non-working valve/sphincter, but they said it was "too risky". I'm not going to argue with them!

The weight loss seems to be picking up again, just a tad... I'm down by 90# now! YEAHHHH!!!!! 10 more to go by Christmas, to make my goal of 100# by then.

I have noticed lately (and so has Bob!) that my stomach is finally starting to flatten out. I mean - it's still got a big apron hanging around, but it's definitely getting smaller. I think I could *almost* wear a shirt tucked into my jeans, if I had a belt! What a concept. I have a very short waist, and even when I was in high school I always thought I looked funny with shirts tucked into jeans. OH well... :)

I tried on Lacy's "Old Navy" t-shirt last night - an XL - and it fit me GREAT! Granted, it's cut big for an XL - but I couldn't believe I could fit into an XL AT ALL! I was wearing men's 5x size this time last year. Wow...

I am THRILLED to say that I weighed in at Mom and Dad's yesterday, and according to their scale (which I've used since day one!) I have lost 95#!!! At this rate, I'll be at minus 100# by Thanksgiving! I was shooting for Christmas.

The next big "goal" after that is to get down to under 200#. After that - who knows? :)

Where the heck did November go? Seems like just yesterday was Halloween, and now there are only a few days left in November!

I hope everyone had a wonderful "Turkey Day". This was my first Thanksgiving, post-op. It was - well, weird. Lacy's Dad was up visiting from Mississippi, so Bob and I went out to eat with my parents and my uncle. We went to a buffet called the Golden Corral. It was OK - nothing special. I ate some turkey, a couple of bites of mashed potatoes, a little stuffing, a yeast roll w/honey butter, some OUTRAGEOUS sweet potatoes and a couple of bites of lemon meringue pie. I probably only ate 3-4 oz. food total, but I felt like I ate a whole Butterball turkey! I didn't feel the least bit deprived.

The next morning I left the house at 6am and went Christmas shopping! First time I've been able to do that in who knows HOW long! I was able to take advantage of a great sale and get a couple of really good Christmas gifts for Bob and Lacy. Looks like this year will be a very good Christmas for everyone. I keep remembering how, last year, I was so looking forward to this Christmas, because I knew that I'd have had my surgery by now and I'd be smaller.

I don't know exactly how much I've lost - I think it's still somewhere between 95-100#. Yippeee! I really need to get back on track with the protein, water and exercise. Especially protein. My hair seems to be getting noticeably thinner! I'm sure I can do better with the protein. That should help.

I went shopping at Speigel over the weekend, and WOW did I ever go nuts. They were having an 80% off sale - and Lacy and I bought some new tops. I've not been able to buy stuff from a "normal" store for so long! I came home with a pretty pink angora sweater, a bright yellow casual sweatsuit-type outfit, and a couple of other tops. I am hoping to have Lacy take some pictures of me tonight, in some of these nice clothes I have (before I grow out of them!).

Hey, two updates in one week! How's THAT for efficiency! LOL. Actually, I'm just bored. Thought I'd list some of the things that are going on in my head these days.

Bob continues to make these remarks that make me feel SO GOOD. For instance, this morning he came in from work and walked into the bedroom to give me a kiss (and to get the dogs & take them outside). He patted me on the rear end a few times, and I said "Be careful - that bony butt will get you!" He said, "Yeah - you've got a bony butt and a bony EVERYTHING!" My shoulders are bony, and I can REALLY feel my collarbones now. I love it! My face feels so tiny, like if I go to rub my eye or something. Lacy can fit her arms all the way around me to the elbows - which she demonstrated to my ex mother-in-law and ex sister-in-law last week (gotta love it!).

I've got to admit, as thrilled as I am with the loss so far, I'm frustrated by the fact that the weight loss has slowed down. Seems like I've been losing/gaining the same 3# back and forth, back and forth, for a few weeks. OH well. I need to keep better track of all this - I'll bet there is a pattern.

Tonight, I'm going to a "Back on Track" meeting at the bariatric center. This is a meeting for people who are 6 mos. post-op or more and feeling like I am - OFF TRACK. I'm going to resolve to do better getting in my protein and water, and EXERCISE! I am not really doing any routine, formal form of exercise - but I am running my butt off! I mean - I'm able to walk around a whole lot more and do more stuff, so I'm very active. Just not formally exercising.

I also need to get back to writing down everything I eat/drink. I think that will help! I just read through a list of what I ate yesterday, and good heavens it seems like a lot! But in the great scheme of things - I don't think it's very much at all...
* a 33oz bottle of water
* a 20 oz. bottle of water
* 2 oz. of salted peanuts
* 1/4 cup spaghetti w/tomato sauce
* 2 oz. of the inside of a Calzone (cheese, pepperoni, sausage)
* 2 Jolly Rancher watermelon candies * 2 oz. pork barbeque
* 1 dill pickle spear
* 1 lemon sandwich cookie
* 1 ounce raw almonds

So, today I've done a little better:
* Protein Shake for breakfast
* 1 oz raw almonds (snack)
* 16 oz. glass of water
* 1/2 italian chicken hot pocket
* 1 piece of jolly rancher watermelon candy
* 1 oz raw almonds (snack)
* 16 oz. glass of water

I'll probably do another 2 oz. of pork barbecue for dinner, and another dill pickle spear. I seem to be addicted to dill pickles lately! (no, I am NOT pregnant!)
