The no. of breaths (inhalation or exhalation) taken by an average
human being per day is 21,600. His average life span is determined by
the no. of breaths to be something around 100 years.
But, an elephant has greater life span because its rate of
breathing is smaller than human being. The tortoise which lives for 300
or 400 years, breathes once in few minutes, while a man breathes many
times a minute.
That's why, rishis of those ages controlled their breath.
