Bosse High School Speech and Debate Team

In the 1920s Bosse High School was built and founded in Evansville, Indiana. At the time, Bosse was eastern point of the city, and where Clayton's Fine Drycleaning and The Med First building now stand, the citizens of the 20s can tell you that then there were cornfields in those exact spot.

In the 1930's,1937 to be exact, the citizens of Evansville experienced a disasterous flood that covered the Ohio River Valley in approximatly 6" of water. Bosse students broke into their school and moved the trophy cases up to the 2nd floor in an effort to save something from their school.

Well, those students did save their trophies; which I, personally, am thankful for; but also they started a movement in their peers. Sure Bosse students have always had school spirt and class appreciation, but I am willing to bet a lot more was there after they realized that someone in their class, whether it be '38, 48, '99 or '01, cared enough to risk their criminal record for the sake of the school.

The Bosse Speech and Debate Team is no different. We have endured countless problems ranging from Chicken Pox to The Ghetto Cow, but we have stayed together- at least we have in the past 2 years since our head coach, Mr. Tim Wilhelmus, took over.

Now, in 1999, we have four equally, yet not in the same way, talented coaches: Mrs. Melissa Bright, Mrs. Paula Viner, Ms. Jill Wiley, and Mr. Tim Wilhelmus. Quite frankly, we are not sure how we would fare without the aid of all four of them.

Mr. Wilhelmus, or Wilbur as I will refer to him, is rather the "dad" of our team, whereas Mrs. Bright is the "mom", Mrs. Viner is like our older sister who we can go to to talk about almost anything from college choices to finding a date for Tolo. And Ms. Wiley is the Queen of Debate. Ooh! She gets a title. :) Actually, Ms. Wiley is an increadbile coach and an impressive teacher. Mrs. Bright is great because she will tell you like it is and if you do not exactly like it you can go to Wilbur and he'll tell you the same thing a little bit sweeter. This foursome is almost as lucky to have us as we are them.

Who are we?

President, Ashley Voyles(12th);
Secretary of Speech, Andrea Farmer(11);
Secretary of National Forensic League(NFL), Heather Hall(11);
Advertisment Officals, Ethan Kuhn(12) and Elizabeth Robinson(10);
and Historian, Jasmine Goff(11), along with approximatly 40 other students make up our team. Our President and Amanda Bolenbough(11) are the longest members of the team- Ashley with 4 years and Amanda with 3. Our highest ranking member of the NFL is Elizabeth Robinson and all of us sincerly hope that by the end of the year we can all have as many points as the officers and long-term members.

Last year we had, on average, 20 competing members. Of the 7 we took to sectionals, 6 went to the state tournament and one placed. I feel we have come a long way from having 2 members- one with Chicken Pox.

For the 1999-2000 season, which has just ended in March, we had a very successful year. We had a first place at the SWIFA tournament: Ashley Voyles received the trophy in Congress. We also had several other students place in the congress section. In prose, Elizbeth Robinson got 9th place.

This season turned out to be a bit of a "down time" year for the vast majority of the team, with everyone scoring way below their high expectations.
The team was very happy and proud of a freshman, LaCreisha Williams, who blew the compettion out of the water in Radio Broadcasting. Not only did she defeat several NFL members, she blew some of her teammates off too. FOr that, LaCreshia, we are proud of you. As Mr. Pardue would say "Bosse is Proud of You!" Hopefully we will continue to grow and this spring we'll take 30 or perhaps all 40 members of our team to sectionals and state. Only time will tell
