In the mid 1980's the World Wrestling Federation introduced a
new, young, flamboyant wrestler from San Antonio, Texas by the
name of Shawn Michaels. In his early 20's, Michaels became tag
team partners with Marty Janetty and went by the name of the
Rockers. The Rockers quickly grew to fame and became the WWF
Tag Team Champions, but the desicion was reversed due to unfit
ring conditions and the belts were given back to the Hart
Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart). After having problems,
the Rockers split up and Michaels and Janetty both went their
separate ways. Michaels did a LOT better without a tag partner
than he did with. He became known as "The Heartbreak Kid"
Shawn Michaels. Although the competition in the WWF grew,
Michaels captured the Intercontinental belt several times. In
1995, he surprised everybody when he was the 1st man in and the
last man standing in the Royal Rumble. 1996 was Michaels’
greatest year ever. He won the ’96 Royal Rumble, his 2nd
consecutive Rumble victory, which put him on the road to a title
shot at WrestleMania XII against Bret Hart in a very unique
match called the Iron Man Match that would last for an hour.
Michaels defeated the Excellence of Execution becoming the WWF
Champion and making his boyhood dream become a reality. During
his 8 month reign as champion, Michaels defended the belt against
some of the most mind boggling, most bizarre wrestlers ever. At
the ’96 Survivor Series he lost the belt to Sycho Sid after Sid
used a TV camera on Jose Lothario, Michaels 62 year old mentor
and friend, and then on Michaels. After that day, his attitude
changed drastically. He was tired of playing by the rules, which
frankly wasn’t getting him anywhere. At the ’97 Royal Rumble,
Michaels was looking for revenge on Sid and the belt to be his
again only this time the match was in his home town. With the
odds physically against him, being only 6’1" whereas Sid is 6’9", he
beat Sid after ironically striking him with a TV camera and
became the WWF Champion once again while surrounded by his
family and friends. On Thursday, February 13, 1997, Michaels
was scheduled to defend the belt against Sid during a special
broadcast of Thursday Raw Thursday. Sadly, the physical strain
on his body caused Michaels to forfeit the championship belt,
leaving it vacant for the upcoming Final Four match, due to an
injured knee that has been plaguing him for some time. Shawn
Michaels fans everywhere watched him hand over the belt to
President Gorilla Monsoon as their own hearts literally broke. We
are all praying that Michaels will return to the WWF someday and
that he will feel better soon. Shawn, from all your fans, good luck
and get well soon. The WWF won’t be the same without you.
On February 17's Monday Night Raw, Shawn's doctor announced
that Shawn will not be having knee surgery now. They are going to
try and rehabilitate him at his home in San Antonio and will
re-evaluate his condition in 4-6 weeks.
Shawn is back!!!! The only thing is that he can't wrestle for
another couple of months. He will be at the Slammy Awards on
Friday, March 21 and at WrestleMania on March 23. Shawn
invited himself to come to these events after Vince McMahon
didn't invite him. He said that the next time he's in the ring
(wrestling) "the clothes are coming off one way or another!!" I will
be sure to have my VCR set and ready to record.
Shawn has been seen on Raw is War several times. Whether he
was yelling at Bret Hart about being a crybaby little whiner, or he
was running out with a chair to try to injure Owen, Bret, and
Bulldog/help Stone Cold Steve Austin he still looks hot and ready
to wrestle. Hopefully he will return to action in the ring soon.
It's official! Shawn will wrestle at the King of the Ring in June.
He said so himself last night on Raw is War among other things
concerning the Hart Foundation who were playing a game of hide
and seek with Shawn.
