Lifes Most Precious Gift - By Liz

PART 1

Hey eveyrone! Liz here, with her new "little" story. I just wanted to clear up some stuff so you all don't think I'm crazy when you read my story and get all confused. The kids are...I dunno...16,17,18, however old they'd be when it's time for them to leave the school. Rob is the age that the kids are on the show now. And I know that might not fit...but hey, I'm the author...I can make up stuff. Meg married Edward (big surprise there) and Nick and Jo STILL aren't together. (WOW did ya see that coming??) At the beginning, Tommy has already left, and Franz went to go teach somewhere else. I promise it'll end happy!!! Enjoy!

The train whistle pierced the peaceful bustle of the town, a signal of its timely departure. It did not, however, disrupt the small band of people huddled near the train. Five children in their late teens, a middle-aged couple, and an African American woman. Although the people stirring about created a happy buzzing sound, the atmosphere between the small group was unusually quiet and solemn.
"Do you have everything?" Jo asked, placing her hands on Emil's shoulders, even though they were somewhat higher than her own.
"Yes Mrs. Jo," he replied with a comforting tone.
Nick looked over at the platform for a moment, then gently said, "It's time." Jo took a deep breath, trying to keep her tears at bay. Emil walked over to Nat and shook his hand.
"See ya around Nat," he said, pursing his lips. He moved on to Dan, who squeezed Emil's hand reassuringly.
"If that navel academy gets too hard, you can always come back," Dan teased.
When Emil walked over to Nan, she gingerly held out a small package. "Here," she said, placing it in Emil's hand, "It's some of that herb that I use to make your tea. It'll help you when...you know, you can't get to sleep and all."
"Thank you Nan," Emil said, staring hard at the small sack. He approached Bess, who had a very sober look on her face. "Goodbye Bess," Emil said quietly. Bess tried to give a small smile, but failed. She put her arms gently around Emil, and gave him a hug.
"Just be careful 'bout eatin' stale meat," Nick joked as he shook Emil's hand and patted him on the back, "You'll do fine Emil, trust me. I've always seen it in ya." Emil nodded and finally turned to Jo.
She held back her tears and smiled bravely, "You write soon, okay?" She tightly embraced him and squeezed her eyes shut.
Emil pulled back, looked her in the eye, and said, "Thank you Mrs. Jo."
"You are so....very...welcome," Jo said hesitantly, trying desperately to keep the tears back just a while longer. Before getting on the train, Emil and Asia embraced, and shared a few secret words away from the group. Then Emil boarded the train, and took his seat by the window.
As another whistle sounded, and the train began to move, Emil waved at his 'family' as each of them put up a brave smile. When the train was just a dot through the trees, Asia was the first to turn away.
"No sense makin' it into somethin' more difficult," she muttered as she headed for the wagon. Bess nudged Nan's arm, and together they walked off too, followed by Nat. Dan lingered, looking at Jo.
"Mrs. Jo?" he said, "You comin'?"
"We'll be along in a minute Dan. Go on," Nick said lightly. Dan hesitantly nodded and walked off, glancing back.
Jo, arms crossed, finally looked away. "Rob's comin' home tomorrow," Nick said, trying to raise her spirits.
"I know," she said, nodding firmly. But her voice shook a bit.
"Come on, let's go," Nick said quietly, offering Jo his hand. She slipped her's into it, and together they walked towards the wagon.

~~~~~~~~~~
"Dear Lord, we thank you for this food, and this family to share it with. We ask you to look over all of the "Plumbfield Family" wherever they may be. Amen," Jo spoke the prayer at dinner, as everyone held hands.
As everyone began to dig in, Jo took a small helping of something on her plate, and began to push it around with her fork. "Aunt Jo," Bess chided, "You need to eat something."
"I will," Jo said, giving her niece a grateful look, "Oh! Did I tell you? I received a letter from Franz today!"
"You did?" Dan asked, "What did he say?"
"He said he's doing fine," Jo replied, a smile on her face, "He's found a teaching job in one of the public schools. The pay is good, and he says the materials he has to work with are excellent!"
"Well does he say anythin' about what it's like livin' in Virginia?" Nan asked.
"He did say that it's a bit warmer, however their winters are said to be more mild than ours," Jo said, her smile fading.
"Well, will he be able to come home for Christmas?" Nat asked, trying to bring back her smile.
"He says he's unsure if he'll be able to, seeing as it is his first year teaching there," Jo said, the smile not returning as hoped. A dismal silence fell over the table. Jo forgot about the food she was pushing around her plate, and instead looked at the empty chairs that surrounded the table.
"Well I've got some news," Bess said with a smile. Jo looked up expectantly, and the other three put down their forks.
"I didn't want to say anything until I was sure...you see, I entered some of my art into a contest a while ago....I didn't even think it was very good...well anyway, the first prize was a full year of study with the finest teachers. And well...I won!" Bess exclaimed.
There were cheers around the table, and Nan "patted" Bess on the back, nearly choking her. "Congratulations Bess!" Jo exclaimed, a smile finally returning to her face.
The small round of congratulations went on, even drawing Asia from the kitchen to join in. However, Dan, not joining in, finally said quietly,
"Where's it at?"
"Where's what at?" Bess asked.
"The full year of study," Dan said, "Where ya gotta go for it?"
Bess looked down and played with the napkin in her lap. "It's in Chicago," she said quietly.
"Chicago?!" Jo exclaimed, clearly shocked but trying to hide it, "Do Amy and Laurie know about this?"
"Yes," Bess replied softly, "We've discussed it already. If I choose to accept the award, I'll have to leave in a month."
"I see," Jo said dejectedly, "If you'll excuse me." She got up from the table and quickly walked upstairs.
The foursome left at the table shot each other glances, but none spoke. Finally, Dan asked, "You gonna except it?"
Bess looked at each of them, earnestly awaiting her answer. "I, I don't know yet. I haven't decided."
PART 2
Asia skillfully 'caught' a plate, as Nan almost dropped it. "Oh Asia! I'm sorry," Nan exclaimed.
"That's alright Nan. Been a long day, why don't you kids go get some fresh air? I'll finish cleanin' up," Asia suggested. At first the kids protested, but, at Asia's insistence, Bess grabbed a shawl, and they went outside.
"Bess, Mrs. Jo's just kinda upset about all of us leavin', that's all. We're all real proud of you," Nat said with a half sigh.
"Yeah Bess, I mean, she was fine until Tommy left...then Emil..and now..." Nan trailed off.
"Ya gotta know that she wants us all to be successful, I guess it's just hard for her," Dan sigh.
"I know," Bess replied, "But sometimes I have to wonder if-"
"Bess, no one would be any happier if we stayed! Mrs. Jo would want us to go out and...well, be successful," Nan finished lamely.
They all nodded their heads in agreement, and a silence settled over the group.
Nat briefly said something to Nan, then turned to Bess and Dan and said, "We're gonna walk up there so we can get a better view of the stars. You two wanna come?"
Dan gave Nat an uncertain look, glanced at Bess, then looked back at Nat again. "Ah, I don't think so Nat," he said. Nat nodded, and he and Nan 'raced' off. Bess gave a rather disdainful look at Nan's running, and Dan laughed.
"Are you laughing at me?" Bess asked, blinking. Dan just grinned. "Well!" Bess humphed. Dan's grin faded a bit, but renewed itself as he offered her his arm in a "mock-gentlemen" manner. Bess herself grinned and took his arm.
They began walking in the opposite direction that Nat and Nan had gone, neither of them saying anything for a while. After a time, Dan asked, "So, what was it?"
"Hmm?"
"The picture that won the award. What was it?"
"Oh," Bess said with a small smile, accompanied by a sigh, "Plumbfield."
"Plumbfield?" Dan said skeptically, "All the wonders of the world, and the one that wins is the picture of Plumbfield??"
Bess 'turned on' her air of refinement and said, "It's not the content, rather the quality of the-"
"Well ya sure didn't win for that!" Dan said, a twinge of anger in his voice. Bess fell silent, withdrew her arm from Dan's, and walked on ahead a bit while he stopped. He and Bess stood there like that for what seemed like forever when Dan finally shook his head and walked over to Bess.
"It's so wonderful here," Bess said softly, surprising Dan who was about to apologize. "Not just the way the tree's look in the fall, but the atmosphere of Plumbfield. The warmth, the happiness...the love. I've loved growing up here. Though it seems that we've finished doing that, haven't we?" Bess' smile turned bittersweet.
"Bess," Dan said, "I didn't mean what I said. You're a talented artist, ya know that. It's just that-"
"Just what Dan?" Bess asked, turning towards him.
"Nothin'," Dan finally replied, "Nothin'." Bess looked slightly disappointed but put up a smile anyway, and took Dan's arm again.
"It's getting late, we better head back," she said quietly. Dan nodded, and they walked back to the house in such a silence that it spoke volumes.
~~~~~~~~~~

"There it is Nan, see it?" Nat asked, pointing upwards.
"No, is it that one?" Nan, puzzled, craned her neck towards the sky in despair.
"No, it's the one right here. Here, come stand where I am," Nat pulled Nan next to him, and they were practically occupying the same space. "See," he said, standing behind Nan and extending his pointed finger up. While Nan was searching, Nat suddenly realized just how close Nan had become.
"Nat, it's no use, I just don't see it. I-" Nan stopped as she turned around, noticing herself just how close they were. Nat, although he tried to control himself, found his hand brushing Nan's hair behind her ear.
Their eyes locked for a moment, and then, before she could stop herself, Nan said, "What're you doing?"
Nat's hand snapped back and he automatically replied, "I'm sorry." Nan waged an inner battle with herself. She wanted to tell him that it was alright, perhaps even that she wanted to be that close to him. But she couldn't. She'd never told anyone anything like that before. Then again, she'd never felt like this before. 'Nat and I are *friends*,' she thought, 'That's ALL. We're best friends, and it's natural for me to like my best friend..'
"Nan? Are you okay?" Nat asked in a worried tone.
"I'm fine," she snapped, "Let's just go inside." Nat nodded and they quietly walked back to the house.

~~~~~~~~~~
Jo sat, rocking, on the back porch, lost in her thoughts. So consumed in fact, that she didn't even notice the arrival of Nick, until he sat beside her.
"Nick," she said, barely acknowledging his presence.
"Kids said you didn't eat much," Nick replied.
"I wasn't hungry," Jo snapped. Immediately she regretted it, and said, "I'm sorry Nick, I don't mean to get upset it's just-" She paused and looked away again.
"I heard about Bess gettin' that scholarship," Nick said slowly, carefully. Jo simply nodded. "Kids gotta grow up sometime Jo. They can't stay here forever, you know that. You also know that you want the best for them. Ya want them to go out there and be successful," Nick said, resting a hand on Jo's arm.
She squeezed his hand and said, "I know, and you're right. I just...I don't know what's going to happen Nick."
"Well, no one knows the future Jo, I mean-"
"No, that's not what I mean. I mean the school. I don't know what I'm going to do. I looked into it, and I've got enough money to live comfortably here....without Plumbfield being a school. I mean, Franz is gone, and well.....I can't imagine any other children here..." Jo trailed off.
"Oh," was all Nick said.
"At least I'll have Rob. I could teach him, Daisy, and Demi. And perhaps some other children-only during the day of course. They wouldn't have to live here," Jo said more to herself than Nick.
"See, everythin' will work out," Nick said grinning. His smile was infectious, and Jo soon found herself smiling as well.
Nick got a sly look on his face and said, "You up for a race?"
"Now? The sun's already gone down!" Jo exclaimed.
"'Fraid of losin'?" Nick teased.
"Nick Riley, let me tell you the one thing about not having any younger children in the house," Jo began.
"And what's that?" Nick smiled.
"You don't always have to set the perfect example," she said, her eyes sparkling as she stood up, "There's no way you're going to beat Penny."
"We'll just see about that," Nick grinned as they headed off for the barn.
PART 3
Jo 'sauntered' into the dining room the next morning, humming some song remembered from her childhood days, and gave a big grin to the foursome seated at the table.
"Good morning! How are you all? Oh, blueberry pancakes! And cinnamon biscuits! My favorite!" Jo exclaimed. The children just stared at her; Nan's mouth hung open, Bess' fork paused in mid-air, and Dan and Nat just stared, wide-eyed.
Jo sat at the table as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on and she said, "You know what? Today seems like a wonderful day for a picnic! Why don't the four of you go on one while I go meet Meg and Rob at the train station?"
There was silence as the children slowly began to get over their shock, and then they just looked at each other in bewilderment. "Mrs. Jo," Dan began, feeling it his responsibility to finally step in, "Are you feelin' okay?"
Jo looked up from pouring syrup on her plate and said with an innocent look, "Yes Dan, why do you ask?" Dan just gave her his half grin and then a rather playful accusing look.
"Look kids, I know that I've been acting rather...upset the past few weeks. The truth is that I'm going to miss all of you. But the reality of the situation is that I also want you to go out there and live your dreams. I have faith in each of you, that you'll do that very thing," Jo said with a smile.
The kids shared glances of relief and solidarity; finally, things seemed to be returning to normal....but then again, what was normal?
~~~~~~~~~~

Jo's smiling face appeared in the mirror as she carefully adjusted her necklace; the same one Rob had given her last year on her birthday. She had on a light gray skirt with an elaborate gray blouse, complete with patches of gray silk and white lace. It was a new ensemble, and Jo wanted to look especially wonderful to go pick up Rob.
Upon her marriage to Edward, Meg had slowly been pulled into a world not unlike Amy's - yet she kept a very keen sense of herself, and never let things go to her head. That's why, when she told Jo of her plans to go to Europe for the summer, and her idea of bringing along Rob, Jo hadn't just said no. She thought about it, and, with some urgings from Amy as well, Jo finally relented. Rob had been thrilled with the idea, and was so very pleased when his mother said he could go. He was excited about all the adventures he thought he'd find, as well as seeing the home country of his father.
Jo checked her watch and mentally chastised herself for taking so much time to 'primp.' She quickly went down the stairs, her head bent in thought, and only looked up as she reached the bottom.
"You look good," Nick said with a grin.
Jo's head shot up in surprise, a smile already in place at hearing *that* voice, "So do you." As they went outside to the wagon, Nick offered
Jo his hand to help her up. She gave it a gentle, excited squeeze and quickly hopped up onto the seat.
Nick jumped up beside her and started the horses. Without realizing it, Jo began to push her feet against the front of the wagon. "Ain't gonna get us there faster," Nick said with another grin.
Jo, realizing what he meant, blushed and smiled all the same. "I've missed him, Nick," she began, "And I've felt....well, upset these past few weeks. But last night..." Jo paused, smiling and slightly blushing, "Thank you Nick."
Nick smiled too and replied, "Glad I could be a distraction for ya."
"Oh, you're a distraction," Jo said, a playful smile on her face, leaving Nick to "wonder" about her true meaning. Nick leaned forward a bit and gave her a sideways glance, but she just smiled and looked forward.

~~~~~~~~~~
"You kids get outta my kitchen! I made you a basket! This here food's for Mrs. Meg and her family," Asia said, nearly slapping Dan's hand before he pulled it away.
"Yes Asia, thank you," Bess said, trying to pull Dan out of the kitchen. He playfully tried to stay as Nan and Nat busied themselves with gathering up the things they'd need for their picnic. Nan kept on giving rather disgusted looks towards Dan and Bess' "playfulness," but Nat just grinned.
Suddenly, Dan picked up a cup of water and turned towards Bess saying, "How you feel about goin' for a swim Bess?"
"Dan, that's not funny," Bess said with a surprised look on her face. He only grinned and stepped closer. Bess' jaw dropped and a look of apprehension graced her usually composed face, "Dan! You wouldn't!!"
"Sure I would Bess," Dan said with one of his grins. Bess took off like a rabbit and ran out of the room, with Dan close behind.
"Mind you don't get nothin' wet," Asia called after them. Nat turned to Nan with a grin...but quickly changed his features when he saw her look. "Would you get outta here already?" Asia smiled at Nat and Nan, "Before those two kill each other!"
Nat smiled and he and Nan turned to leave. As they walked out the door, Nat placed his hand on the small of Nan's back, gently "protecting" her. Nan's face twitched and she tried to resist squirming.
"Nan," Nat began in an unsure voice, "I wanted to talk to you about - about..." As they walked out the front door, a spray of water hit Nat in the face. For a moment all he could hear were the giggles of Bess and Nan's laugh. When he could see, he shot Dan a devilish look and said, "You shouldn't have done that."
Dan grinned and he and Nat practically chased each other the entire way there. Bess and Nan hung back, making idle conversation. "Nan, don't you think that Nat and Dan have grown into fine young gentlemen?" Bess asked as she flashed Dan a smile that made him stop in his tracks....and resulted in Nat finally catching up to him!
"I dunno, I guess," Nan said absent-mindedly.
"Nan," Bess began, "Have you given any thought to what you're going to do?"
"Some," Nan replied.
"Well," Bess said rather tactfully, "Have you given any thought to....maybe....marrying Nat?"
"Marrying Nat??!" Nan exclaimed, clearly a bit more than shocked.
"Well yeah Nan," Bess said, trying to make the idea sound as normal to Nan as she could, "I mean, it's obvious that he's in love with you."
"In love with me?" Nan again questioned. A silence fell over the girls, and Nan quickly decided that the best thing to do would be to forget about it. "Well what about you and Dan?" she asked, taking her fair "turn."
Bess grew slightly pink, "What about me and Dan?"
Nan rolled her eyes, "Well it's obvious that you two have feelin's for eachother. I mean, you're always playing around and stuff."
Bess looked as though she was about to say something, but instead changed her mind and exclaimed, "Look! We're here!" Nat and Dan helped them spread out the blanket near a rather tall tree, so they would have some shade. As Nat and Dan began to try and go through the basket, a happy mood settled over the four, and they truly felt as though they were children again.
PART 4
Jo followed the length of the train, back and forth with her head, searching. Nick stood next to her with a small grin, as though he had a secret-which in fact, he did. To those around her that did not know her well enough, Jo looked utterly composed. Yet Nick noticed how her hand shook a bit, and how she clenched her jaw just a tad.
He also shared her excitement...which was an odd thing, for Rob wasn't his son. 'Still,' thought Nick, 'Can't help feelin' happy when he comes home.' As Nick gazed thoughtfully at Jo, and she in turn searched, a voice emerged above all the others.
"Mother! Mother!"
Jo suddenly began to show more outward signs of excitement. "Rob?" she said softly, searching even more. And then, as if by magic, the crowds almost seemed to part, and Rob was standing there, a grin on his face - that same grin that reminded her of Fritz.
He practically ran into her arms, and she squeezed him so tightly that Nick almost told her to ease up. She closed her eyes, trying to savor this wonderful moment, and kissed him several times. "Hi sweetie! How was your trip?" she asked, her voice nearly brimming with happiness.
"Wonderful! I got you all presents, and I saw the city that you said Papa used to talk about, and Aunt Meg has the greatest surprise for-" Edward put his hand over Rob's mouth and gave Jo a smile.
"Hello Jo! Nick! I think Meg would like to...er...tell Jo herself Rob," he said smiling. Rob nodded, and the hand was taken away.
"And I saw where you said Dickens was from, and I saw..." Rob continued on and on, and Jo listened with such a look on her face...that she didn't even notice Meg until she stood right in front of them.
Jo's happy gaze fell on Meg's face first....and then turned to shock as she took in the rest of Meg. Something was different.....Meg looked rather.....plump.
"Oh Meg!" Jo breathed softly, her voice shaking slightly, "You're-" Meg nodded, tears also in her eyes, and she embraced her sister.
"The doctor we saw in England said that it might not have been a good idea to go on a sea voyage, but I told him that there was no way this baby was going to be born anywhere but at home, with the people I love," Meg said smiling.
"And you should have seen her too Jo!" Edward exclaimed, coming up behind his wife, "She would have made you proud!"
Jo smiled and asked, "Where are the children?"
"Oh," Meg said, "They were feeling tired, so we arranged for them to go straight home. Besides, I knew you'd want us to come over first thing."
Jo smiled and sigh, "Well, let's go home!" Nick grinned and rustled Rob's hair. Rob looked up at Nick, that same hero-like adoration still there, and grinning, took his hand in his own. Then he took his mother's hand, and the three of them lead the way to the wagon.
~~~~~~~~~~

"I don't know Dan, sometimes," Bess smiled as she continued to watch where she stepped. She daintily picked up her pastel dress as she made her way through the woods. Dan, who had gone on a walk with her, was walking...somewhere...Bess couldn't really see him.
"I mean, goin' off for more schoolin' kinda sounds boring," his voice came from somewhere to the left...or right, Bess couldn't really tell.
"Well, I enjoy art," Bess said, with an edge of annoyance in her voice.
"I know it's just...I mean, well don't you ever wonder what you'd do if you didn't go?" Dan asked.
"What do you mean Dan?" Bess asked, only half listening.
"Well I mean you and me, if you weren't gonna go, would we-" suddenly Dan popped out from behind a tree, and stood right in front of Bess. She gave a start when he suddenly appeared, but her initial shock changed into a quiet sort of...apprehension.
"We'd what Dan?" she said softly.
"Nothin'," Dan said, averting his gaze. Yet he didn't move from where he was standing.
Bess glanced around, and then did something that her mother would have probably had a heart attack over. She brought up a hand to Dan's face, and turned it slowly towards her's. Dan's shocked eyes looked back at Bess right as she slowly brushed her lips against his.
Dan basically froze in shock, and Bess pulled back, a small triumphant smile on her face. When Dan had finally figured out what happened, all he could think of to say was, "I love you Bess." Bess almost gasped, and it was her turn to look at him in shock.
'Way to go! THAT was a smart thing to say,' Dan mentally chastised himself, 'Now she's gonna run off, and probably never come near you again, and...'
"What did you say Bess?" Dan asked, barely listening and almost completely lost in his thoughts.
"I said," Bess replied slowly, and turning her head up a bit, almost as if she was proud, "That I love you too." Dan had been listening that time, and just nodded his head a little, his mouth hanging open.
"Well aren't you going to say anything?" Bess asked, suddenly feeling a bit awkward.
Again, Dan felt tongue tied...and the only thing that came out this time was, "Marry me?" 'Oh GEEZ! What's wrong with you? Can't you do nothin' right???' Dan thought with a grimace.
Bess had a million thoughts running through her mind...school, home, her parents...she paused for a moment, and then said, "Yes Dan, I will."
"I thought you'd say that Bess, really, no hard feelin's, I understand, I-" Dan paused, "What did you say?" Bess only looked at him with a smile. "Did you say yes?" Dan ran a hand through his hair and took a few deep breaths.
"Yes....ye...yes," he kept on muttering. Then, with a huge grin, he grabbed Bess and began to twirl her around.
"Dan!" she exclaimed, giggling.
When Dan finally put her down, he kissed her and said, "But what about school? The scholarship?"
"I don't have to go," Bess said truthfully, "And I'd give it up...to marry you." She felt a little odd saying those words...but still, they made her so happy.
Dan just sigh and gazed at her with a happy expression on his face. Bess blushed slightly and said, "Let's wait, and not tell anyone until I've told my parents okay?" Dan nodded, and they began to walk back together, making plans.

~~~~~~~~~~
"Best....Christmas?" Nat asked.
"Oh, that's easy. Remember that first year I was here? And you guys found Sara in the woods," Nan said.
'How could I possibly forget?' thought Nat, 'I remember everything about you.'
"Hmm, oh yeah. Your turn," Nat said.
"Hmmm," Nan said thoughtfully, "How 'bout your favorite experience in the barn? Like mine was the time that Tommy took the..." But Nat was no longer listening. He had been transported back to a chilly day...he'd been wearing his green sweater. And he and Nan had retreated to the barn after their final attempt at matchmaking had failed....
"Nat!" Nan said again.
"Oh, uh, say, do you remember that day in the barn?" Nat asked. At Nan's "what? are you crazy?" look, he went on, "After we tried to get Bess and Dan together?"
Nan's face suddenly turned from happy and free, into guarded and cautious. "Yep," was all she said.
Nat was finding it hard to interpret her reaction. He took a deep breath and said, "That was one of the best days of my life."
Nan was almost torturing herself on the inside. She wanted so badly to tell Nat that it had been the best day of her life too....but she couldn't. She only mumbled, "Wonder where Bess and Dan are..."
Nat nodded his head self consciously and said, "Yeah, it's gettin' kinda late." As Nat began to get up, Nan stopped him and pulled him back down.
"Nat, there's somethin' I wanted to tell ya," she said slowly, unsure of herself, "I applied to a medical college a while back...and well...they accepted me." Nat just looked at her in utter surprise. "I didn't say anythin' to Mrs. Jo because she was already upset about everyone else leavin', and then Bess..." Nan trailed off.
"Wh- where's it at?" Nat asked, his voice wavering a bit.
"Pennsylvania...actually, Philadelphia," Nan said quietly.
Nat looked as if....well...as if someone had just killed his puppy. (*Liz shakes her head* sorry! It was the only way I could explain=) "When do you leave?" he asked, his voice slightly horse.
"Well, see, that's the thing, I gotta leave in a month, same as Bess," Nan said, "And I'm worried about tellin' Mrs. Jo." The two friends sat in silence for some time.
"Nan, she'll be happy for you," Nat finally said.
Nan nodded, and the silence returned until she said, "Are....you happy for me?"
Nat tried to restrain the look he gave her as he said, "If it makes you happy Nan, it will always make me happy." Nan ducked her head and said no more. They were saved from the uncomfortable silence by the arrival of Bess and Dan.
"Hey you two! Ready to go?" Dan's voice seemed happy.....too happy.
"Yeah," Nat said, not really paying attention. Nan only gave them a curious look as they started to clean up the picnic.
~~~~~~~~~~

"Yes, well you know that it is getting to be the time for school again," Jo said, hinting to Meg.
"Yes..." Meg hesitated and glanced to Edward, "Jo, I wanted to talk to you about that. Well, actually about Daisy, Demi, and Rob. You see I-"
"Presents!" Rob called as he entered the room with a small bag. Jo forgot all about what Meg had been saying, and gave him a huge grin.
"Oooh, my favorite!" she said with a laugh. Asia smiled too, as she stood next to Meg's chair. Edward hurriedly got her another one, and then stood between the two ladies.
Rob plopped himself down on the sofa next to Jo and, patting the spot on the other side of him said, "Here Nick! You can sit here." Nick had an indescribable look on his face; a mix of surprise, honor, and joy. Jo gave him such a look that he almost forgot for a moment where.....and maybe even who he was.
"What, uh...sure Rob," he said with a grin, sitting down. Jo went back to looking excited about Rob's presents. (Most likely things Meg and Edward had purchased....but they all pretended for Rob's sake.)
"First.....Asia, close your eyes!!" Rob said with a grin. Asia obeyed and Rob hopped off the sofa and stood next to Asia. He placed a rather large book in her hands and she opened her eyes.
Asia's mouth almost dropped open and she muttered, "What in the world..."
"It's a cook book Asia!" Rob explained, "Aunt Meg and Uncle Edward helped me find it. This way, you can make food for Mother just like what we ate." Asia hugged the boy and praised the book over and over.
Rob soon returned to the couch and reached into his bag once again, "Mother, close your eyes," he said with a huge smile. Jo did as told, andresisted the urge to peek. Rob placed another book into Jo's lap, and a wrapped parcel as well.
"Well, let's see, what do we have here?" Jo asked, opening her eyes. She made a half-sigh, half-gasp noise and ran her hands over the cover.
"It's by Mr. Dickens! And look inside!" Rob opened the book for Jo, "See, he wrote in it!"
"Where on earth did you?!" Jo was almost speechless.
"Edward has a signed copy, as I told you once, and well, he's got some friends over in London.....they were only two happy Jo," Meg said smiling.
"Thank you sweetheart! This is the best present I've ever gotten!" Jo said, hugging Rob tightly again.
"Wait! There's another one," Rob said, pulling the wrapped package out from under the book.
"Well what do we have here?" Jo said softly, unwrapping the package carefully. She gave a start as the paper fell away, and she was left staring at a beautiful painting….not unfamiliar….
"Mother! Do you know what it is?" Rob said, excitement in his voice. Jo couldn't think for a moment; she only gazed at the painting.
"It's…..it's not - no, it couldn't be-" Jo couldn't finish her sentence.
"Yep! It's the town you said Papa always used to describe! You described it well too! And now look, you can hang it up!" Rob said, taking the picture from Jo's hands and holding it up to the wall. Jo simply smiled and nodded, too touched to speak.
Jo broke the silence by finally saying, "Well, these are some of the best gifts we've ever gotten! Who's hungry? You all must be starving, I'm sure that…"
"Mother!" Rob interrupted, giving Jo an exasperated look. Jo just gave him a look of surprise and waited for him to go on.
"I'm not finished," Rob said with a grin.
"Well who…." Jo trailed off as realization swept over her.
"I've got a present for Nick!" Rob grinned as he pulled yet another package out of his bag. He didn't even bother telling Nick to close his eyes, for the package was wrapped. Nick gave a look of total shock to both Jo and Rob, yet he opened the package.
Inside was yet another book, and Nick colored at his small trouble with the words. "See, here! It says 'A Ship's Voyage,'" Rob said proudly.
Nick gave a small nod, and still rather flushed said, "It's a nice gift and all Rob, but you know I still can't read so well."
Rob only smiled and said, "I know, but it has pictures….and I thought we could read it together!" Nick's eyes were filled with so much emotion that he made himself look away for a moment. This was something new. When Dan or Nat or any of the other boys had looked up to him as a father figure when they were younger, Nick had been pleased beyond words, and had always felt rather unworthy. But to have Rob, Jo's son, look up to him…..that was something entirely different. And while Nick knew why this moved him, he also knew why things had stayed the same for all that time.
"That'd be real nice," Nick said with a smile, trying to convey to Rob just how much this gift meant. He patted the boy's shoulder, and was greatly surprised to receive a hug in return. All this while, Jo had been watching, her emotions slightly guarded yet still readable. As much as Rob's gift touched Nick, it touched her as well. The fact that Rob looked to Nick as a father figure - and probably always had - stuck in her mind. And yet, she had to wonder, yet again as she so often did, why she and Nick had remained "friends" for all this time……
"Well everyone, I think that now it's time to eat," Asia said with a grin.
"Oh Asia, I have missed your cooking," Meg said with a sigh and a smile. They all trampled off towards the kitchen, Jo and Nick hanging back. Nick gave a fond look at his book and carefully placed it on the table.
"He's a great kid Jo," was all that Nick could say.
"I'm not the only one that raised him," Jo said, the corner of her mouth turning upwards and a twinkle in her eye. With that she turned on her heel and followed the happy party to the kitchen, leaving Nick to gaze after her with an incredulous look.

PART 5

"I really missed you," Jo said quietly as she hugged Meg one last time.
"Oh, me too Jo," Meg replied with a smile. Her face changed then, and she looked preoccupied, "Jo, I really need to talk to you about something…it's important…"
"Are you ready to go darling?" Edward said, joining the ladies.
Meg looked unsure, then said, "Well, I'll come by tomorrow Jo. We can talk about it then. It's nothing really." She smiled as if to reassure Jo further, but Jo had begun to worry already.
"Alright then, see you!" Jo called as Meg and Edward got into their carriage. Just as they were leaving, another carriage raced down the lane. Nick walked over to see what the 'commotion was.' The carriage came to a quick halt, and Laurie got out and helped Amy out as well.
"Jo! Did we miss her?" Amy asked, looking around.
"I'm afraid you did Amy," Jo said with a small smile, "They just left."
"I told you that was their carriage," Amy almost snapped at Laurie. He simply rolled his eyes and tried not to laugh. "Well, where's Bess?" Amy asked.
"She went on a picnic with the others….they should be back soon," Jo said.
Nick squinted off into the distance and said, "I think that's them, over there." Sure enough, four figures were slowly making their way to the house.
"Well, I want to talk to her," Amy said abruptly, going into the house, "I'm going to wait in the parlor, Laurie! Are you coming?" He grinned at Jo and followed Amy into the house.
Jo gave Nick a look and said, "I think I'm going to go see where Rob ran off to." Nick nodded, and they went their separate ways. Jo stopped in the kitchen, where Asia told her that Rob had retreated to his room after they had eaten.
"I don't know what Jo, but somethin's botherin' that boy," Asia said in a sure tone. Jo's brows furrowed, yet she only nodded and headed upstairs.
Meanwhile, the foursome had finally reached the house. Nat and Nan went around to the kitchen to dispose of the remains from the picnic, but Bess and Dan slowly began to walk to the front of the house.
"Their carriage is here," Bess said, taking another deep breath.
"Yeah," was all Dan could say.
"It's probably best if we tell them now," Bess said, looking to Dan for confirmation. Dan only gave her an unsure look and nodded his head.
Bess then made up her mind for good, took Dan's hand, and started to 'lead' him into the house.

~~~~~~~~~~
"May I come in?" Jo asked, knocking on Rob's door. He quickly looked up and smiled….but it wasn't his usual smile. "Sweetheart, is anything wrong?" Jo asked gently, sitting on the bed next to him.
Rob seemed to think about it for a second, then shrugged his shoulders and said, "Nope."
Jo paused for a few moments, then said, "Because, you know you can tell me anything, right?"
This caused Rob to think for several minutes, before he finally said, "Well, Aunt Meg was supposed to talk to you about something…..but I don't think she did."
"What was it?" Jo asked, "How about you tell me?"
Rob again thought for a moment, and then said, "It's about school for Daisy, Demi, and me…."
Jo grinned, "I thought she might!" Rob looked at Jo with an expression of relief. "Well, I'm pretty sure I know what you're talking about," Jo said with a smile, "And I think it's a great idea if you all want to go to school together here!" Rob's face fell.
"That's not it," he said softly. Jo looked at him expectantly, waiting for him to go on. "Daisy and Demi are going to a school in Boston," he blurted out.
Jo tried to conceal her surprise, but there were still traces of shock on her face. "Oh, I see. Well, Meg never said anything about this to me," she muttered. She then patted Rob's back and said, "Well, I know you must be worried about being the only one left at the school, but I'm sure we can find some other kids that want to go during the day. I was thinking that I could teach during the day, but the kids would have to-"
"Mother, I want to go with them," Rob interrupted. This time, the shock on Jo's face was obvious. She couldn't say anything for a while, so Rob went on, "It's a really good school, and Uncle Edward and Aunt Meg will be living in Boston the whole time we go to school there. And we can sometimes come for visits on the weekends."
"Visits," Jo said wistfully, "I don't know Rob, you just got back, and I don't think it's such a-"
"But mother, it's a really good school, and I'd be living with Aunt Meg and Uncle Edward, and I'd still come home to visit!" Rob pleaded.
Jo shook her head and said, "I don't know, you'll have to let me think about it."
"Talk to Aunt Meg, she'll tell you," Rob added.
There was silence for a while, and then Jo said softly, "You really want to go here?" Rob only nodded. "Come here," she said, pulling him closer to her, "I promise that I'll think about it." Rob beamed and hugged Jo tightly.
"Thanks mother! I knew you would!" he whispered. Jo only gave him a desperate look that he couldn't see, a slight trace of tears forming in her eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~

"WHAT?" Amy's voice boomed. Dan tried not to wince….or to let on that he wanted to run out of the room. Bess had just informed her parents of her plans to marry Dan…and needless to say, Amy was not taking it well.
"I said, I'm going to marry Dan," Bess said smoothly - of course, she was only calm on the outside.
"When? Where? How?" Amy exclaimed.
"As soon as possible," Bess replied.
"What about school?"
"I won't go."
"Not go!! Do you know what a chance-what an opportunity this is? Bess, this opportunity may never present itself again. You can always marry Dan!"
"Mother!" Bess exclaimed, her face beginning to flush.
"Laurie!" Amy exclaimed, "Please help me!"
"Father will tell you!" Bess said, sure of herself, "He'll tell you that it's a good idea! Right father?"
Laurie stepped forward and said, "I'm sorry Bess….I agree with your Mother."
"WHAT?" it was Bess' turn to become agitated, "How can you?"
"Listen honey, I know that you and Dan care about each other very much-"
"We love each other!"
"Yes, but sweetheart, if you marry each other now, you'll regret it later," Laurie said, "You've always wanted to learn how to paint better…and Dan, what about your dreams of going out west?"
"I don't care about that," Dan said truthfully.
"Dan, you may say that, and indeed you may think that, but there is a simple truth. If you two don't discover who you are, before you decide to spend the rest of your lives together….if you never live your dreams, then you'll ultimately regret it."
"Hear me out," Dan began, "Mr. 'n Mrs. Lawrence, I love your daughter. I don't just think I do, I know it. I'd do anything for her. I'd give up all my dreams of the west for her. I'm willin' to do anything for her."
"Then you'll be willing to forget about all this foolish "marriage" nonsense," Amy said briskly.
Bess turned to Amy with an enraged look and said, "It's not 'foolish' and it's not 'nonsense' mother!!"
"Bess, please-" Laurie tried to intercede.
"And you are not going to stop me!" Bess went on.
"Well we'll just see about that young lady. I did not raise you and give you all the best opportunities just so that you could grow up to marry someone like….like…that!" Amy said, her voice rising.
"Amy, please….Bess, why don't we all just-" Laurie's attempt fell on deaf ears as mother and daughter continued to fight.
"How dare you?" Bess exclaimed, "Mother, haven't I always done as you asked? Always acting adult, always doing what you wanted me to do? Well not this time mother. I love Dan, and there's nothing you can do to stop me." With that, Bess stormed out of the room, leaving Dan behind with a blank look on his face.
Amy gave an enraged look towards the direction that Bess had set off in, and rushed out of the room in the opposite direction. Laurie just glanced at Dan, and then looked in both directions, wondering who to follow.
"I'll go talk to Mrs. Lawrence," Dan finally said, sounding a lot braver than he actually was.
Laurie just looked at him skeptically and said, "Are you sure Dan?" Dan paused for a moment before shaking his head. Laurie too paused, but finally shook his own head in agreement, "Alright…I'll go after Bess."
Dan took a deep breath and went in the direction that Amy had gone…..it was now…or never…

PART 6

Amy stood on the back porch, deeply lost in her thoughts. She gave a little jump when someone cleared their throat next to her, announcing their arrival. She turned on her heel and gave Dan an incredulous look; this boy just didn't know when to quit did he?
"Can I help you?" Amy said, a bit harsher than she meant to.
Dan swallowed a bit and said, "Listen, I just want to talk to you." Amy resisted the urge to just walk away, and instead nodded her head ever so slightly. Dan became more comfortable and nodded his head. "Alright, I won't waste your time tellin' you I love Bess, cuz you know that already. I think we've known for a while now…just scared of tellin' each other. And well, the first thing outta my mouth…..the second," Dan gave a small grin, "Was me askin' her to marry me."
Amy just gave Dan an uncomfortable glance and was about to speak when he went on. "Look, I know you may think it was a spur of the moment thing, and I know you may think that I don't deserve a girl like Bess….and you're right, I don't. She's so wonderful, how could I ever hope to deserve her. But I do know that I love her. Ever since we were kids and she drove me crazy….and I just want you to know that I'll do my best to see that we do it with your consent," Dan finally finished, and mentally crossed his fingers.
Amy gave Dan an exasperated look and said, "It's not that I don't want you two to get married." At Dan's skeptical look she went on, "I'll admit I had my reservations….and I still do, but I've always seen something between you two. I just don't want Bess to throw away this opportunity for something that…..that…" Amy looked away, and Dan got her silent message that she wished to be left alone. As he was leaving, he turned back and said, "Mrs. Laurence, I never had no family…this here at Plumbfield's been the closest I've ever come. You 'n Mr. Laurence have been part of that from the beginnin', sponsorin' me and all. I just wanna say that I thank ya, and I respect ya, and any decision you make…..but I love Bess too much to give up….and believe me, I won't."
Amy made sure Dan was gone before she turned around and briskly wiped a trace of a tear in her eye. She sigh and left the porch, not in any particular direction, but simply wandering….thinking of her own past and youth.

~~~~~~~~~~
As Jo hurried into the kitchen, she ran right into Dan. "What's going on!?" she exclaimed, "I heard yelling? Is something wrong?"
"Naw," Dan said, running a hand through his hair.
Nick came in the back door and also inquired after the yelling, "I saw Amy runnin' off one way…and Bess another, did somethin' happen?"
Dan sighed and said, "Bess and I are gonna get married."
Jo smiled and began to hug Dan when realization swept over her and she said, "You just told them, didn't you?" Dan nodded. "Well, I'm sure they'll come around," Jo said, "Well….I hope Amy will anyway."
Dan nodded and asked Nick where Bess had run off to. "Don't know Dan, looked like the school house…but why would she be goin' there?" Nick replied. Yet Dan must have known something the others didn't, because he raced out of the door with a knowing look.
Jo bit her lip and gave Nick a worried look….which he mirrored back. Yet another problem to add on to the list……
~~~~~~~~~~

"I always used to think that my parents were terribly romantic," Bess said, swinging her legs as she sat on the desk next to Dan in the semi-dark schoolroom. "They ran into each other in Europe….fell in love in Paris, it was the most romantic thing I'd ever heard of. Better than any fairytale or story. I thought that when I grew up, I'd be just like them. I'd fall in love, get married, and they'd be SO happy for me. I never thought mother would react like this…"
Dan took her hand, "She just cares about you-"
"Yeah? Well she's got a funny way of showing it," Bess interrupted.
Dan hopped down off the desk and stood in front of Bess, taking both her hands in his. "I love you, you know that. And Bess, I wanna marry you more than anythin' but maybe we should listen to your parents." At Bess' shocked look he went on, "Your scholarship is a great thing….Bess you've got so much talent! If you go there, and we wait to get married, then…." Dan trailed off and looked away so he wouldn't have to see Bess' reaction. After a moment or two of silence Bess gently pushed up Dan's chin with her finger and said, "I love you too. And you're right, I do want that scholarship. But I can't stand the thought of us waiting!"
"I know, and neither can I Bess….but what if it's the only way?" Dan asked.
"The only way? What do you mean Dan?"
"The only way we'll ever truly be happy." That brought silence over the two, and neither of them said anything for a long time.
"Where would you go?" Bess asked.
"West," was the only reply Dan could give her. He sat back on the desk with her, and grasped her hand tightly. Bess turned and, with a hopeless sigh from Bess, the two touched foreheads.

~~~~~~~~~~
The quiet chirping of crickets was the only sound that could be heard as Jo sat outside on the back porch once again, the moonlight streaming across her face. It was beginning to be her favorite part of the day; everyone was safe, in bed. No one could leave her at night…well, no one had so far!
"You okay?" A voice greeted her as she looked up.
"What?"
"Are you okay? I mean, you didn't eat much at supper again, and I…I can tell," Nick said.
"Well I'm fine."
"Oh, alright, if you say so," Nick said, sitting down next to her.
After a few minutes of silence, the inevitable happened. Jo said, "Rob wants to go to school."
After a few more moments of silence Nick said in confusion, "And you don't want him to?"
"He wants to go to school in Boston with Daisy and Demi," she added. Nick just nodded, finally understanding.
"Are you gonna let him?"
"Well," Jo said taking a deep breath, "he wants to…and it's an excellent opportunity…"
"When does he leave?" Nick asked.
"Two weeks." Nick looked at Jo in the moonlight, and he saw her. He saw how she tried to be cheerful when she felt like she was losing her family….her "career"….her life. And he saw how painful it would be for her to part with her real son. Yet how she put all of the children's dreams above her pain. He saw how she doubted herself, how she wondered and feared the future. And finally, and most greatly, he admired her.
"You ain't never put your needs in front of them," he said simply. She gave him a small smile, and a nod, and then went back to looking at the stars. After a while, he got up and gazed at the stars from the porch railing. "Ain't nothin' like lookin' at them stars from a ship in the middle of the ocean….nothin' for miles around. You wouldn't believe it," he said, and started to walk towards the barn. "Nick," Jo called after him. He paused, and turned back. "Don't you ever wish you could go on one more adventure….see those stars one more time?" she asked.
He walked back over to her and said, "There's stars everywhere-if ya just look." He began walking away and said, "As for adventures….never stopped havin' them!" Jo shot a happy, secret grin in his direction and it was Nick she gazed at as he walked away… her shining star when she needed him.
PART 7
It was another beautiful day at Plumbfield; the colors of the trees and the sky were enough to make one stop and catch their breath. Yet in the midst of all that, there was a general cloud over the inhabitants of Plumbfield; a marriage in question, a questionable friendship, and a mother facing one of life's greatest struggles. Nick was determined that morning to help ease at least one of those problems.
"Mornin' Asia," he said, coming into the kitchen.
"You're late," Asia said with a small grin, "Breakfast was a while ago."
"I know, I was workin' on somethin'….say, is Jo around?"
"She's upstairs, didn't even come down for breakfast. Rob's worried, poor boy thinks it's his fault for some reason," Asia said shaking her head.
"Where's he now?"
"Upstairs with her. She called for him 'bout 20 minutes ago," Asia replied. Nick gave a glance up the stairs, and reluctantly sat down at the table. For the next five minutes he was up and down, up and down. Finally, Asia said, "Sit!" And she placed some food in front of him, hoping to distract him. It worked for a little while.
"Asia," Nick began thoughtfully, "If Rob leaves, then Plumbfield won't be a school no more right?"
"I s'pose so. Don't think Mrs. Jo has the heart to enroll a bunch of new kids."
"And so if everyone's gone, then it'll just be you, Jo, and me, right?"
"Well, I'm goin' to go visit my family for a while….so it'll probably just be you and Jo."
"That's what I thought," groaned Nick, "Asia, it's one thing when people talk. But I been thinkin' and I can't live here alone with Jo. It'd be more than just people speculatin'….two unmarried adults livin' together?" Asia simply nodded her head…knowing what was coming. Yet she remained silent; she wanted Nick to do this all on his own.
"Now let's say there were…different circumstances," Nick said thoughtfully, getting up from the table.
"Nick--what do you mean?"
"What? I mean different circumstances…..what I'm tryin' to say is….well….I mean, say I wanted to…..well if I was interested in…." Nick floundered and Asia, with a grin finally decided to help him.
"Sure would be nice if Jo could get outta the house for a while," Asia said thoughtfully…to no one in particular.
"Know what Asia? You're absolutely right. I guess I could take her somewhere…uh….maybe…"
"What about a picnic?" Asia asked slyly.
"Yeah! Yeah, a picnic!" Nick exclaimed as if the idea were his own, "But what would I…."
"Nick!" Asia said, "You just sit down at that table and listen good!" Nick looked shocked but did as she asked. "Gotta act like yougin's," Asia muttered, "Always gotta lead them by the hand….Nick, I know exactly what you should do!" And as Nick listened silently as Asia relayed to him her "spur of the moment" idea…..Asia finally set her plan in motion….
~~~~~~~~~~

Laurie awoke in bed to find Amy sitting up straight next to him. "Sweetheart?" he mumbled in concern.
"Oh, I'm sorry I woke you," Amy sighed with a frown. Laurie's concerned look stayed in place as he sat up next to her. He knew she was thinking about Bess and Dan, and he also knew that what she needed was silence until she was ready to talk about things.
After a while, her voice broke the silence by saying, "They remind me of us."
Laurie knew of course, the "they" she was talking about and asked, "How so my dear?"
"They've known each other so long, and now that they've discovered these feelings….they want to act so fast," Amy replied. After more silence she said softly, "Sometimes I wonder if we acted in haste. I wouldn't ever go back and change anything Laurie, but sometimes I do wonder; my painting, your music. What might have been?"
Laurie thought about that for a while and finally said, "Then I think we should persuade Bess to use her scholarship….a few years apart will allow them to try out those other dreams….and I believe their love is strong enough." Amy nodded, and after a few moments, Laurie began to get up.
As he neared the door, Amy called out, "Or perhaps we should have them wait only one year." At Laurie's surprised look she went on, "The scholarship is good for a year…and I think that after that time, they'll both know what they want. Laurie, dreams are important yes… but……life is short."
Laurie, looking at his wife in silent admiration, walked over to her and placed a kiss on her forehead. "Who knew my wife was not only charming and lovely, but a secret romantic at heart?" he smiled and chuckled softly. Amy looked down modestly, and Laurie actually laughed as her cheeks turned slightly pink. "Shall we ride out and tell her after breakfast?" Laurie asked.
Amy nodded and squeezed his hand. "Our little girl is finally…..grown up," she said softly with a bittersweet smile.

~~~~~~~~~~
"…and as long as you'd be happy," Jo said with a smile, softly touching Rob.
"Are you sure?" Rob couldn't keep the excitement out of his voice.
"Of course I am!" Jo smiled. Hesitation suddenly filled his face and Jo asked, "Is there something else?"
"Well…..what will you do?" he asked simply. At her confused look he went on, "After I've gone and Bess, Dan, Nan, Nat….after they all leave, who'll be here to take care of you?"
Jo gave her son a curious glance and smiled at his kind thinking. "Why I won't be alone! Don't worry, Asia will be here," she said.
"And Nick," Rob said grinning. Jo gave him an uncomfortable glance and fidgeted nervously. "Thanks mother," Rob said planting a kiss on her cheek. Jo hugged him as if he were leaving that very second…not wanting to waste any precious time. And then, just as suddenly as he'd appeared in her room, he left.
Jo sigh and walked downstairs into the….empty kitchen? 'What's going on?' she thought nervously. "Asia? Children?……Nick?" she called out. She made her way to the front of the house, and walked outside. She caught a glimpse of someone on horseback, riding very quickly.
"Jo!" a voice seemed to call out. Jo pulled her shawl tighter around her and looked in curiosity at the approaching stranger. Once he came nearer, she realized it was no stranger, but Nick!! "Something wrong?" she called out in alarm.
"Jo! Your sister!! Gotta come quick!!" he panted.
"Just let me get a horse-"
"No time!" Nick said quickly, lowering his hand, "Gonna have to ride with me." After a second's hesitation, Jo placed her hand in his and quickly swung up in front of him. Her being that close to him almost made her forget everything else for a moment, but then they were speeding off down the lane. The funny thing was that Jo, being that close to him, forgot to ask questions as she usually did… Of course, maybe that was all part of the plan…
~~~~~~~~~~

"Nat! Where did you say we were going again?" Nan asked in a tired voice.
"I didn't," Nat grinned and tugged on her hand, "Come on…it's only a little farther, I promise!"
"Oh, all right," Nan muttered several other things under her breath which Nat couldn't quite make out.
"What was that?" Nat inquired.
"Oh nothing, I was just reminding myself of why I agreed to come all the way out here this early in the morning for…..why are we out here again?" Nan asked.
"Nice try Nan, but it's a surprise," Nat said again.
"Still, can't I even have a little hin-"
"SHHHH!!" Nat hissed, pulling Nan up next to him and pointing up ahead.
"Nat, I don't see what the-"
"Over there," Nat said softly, pointing to a small figure, which appeared to be lying on the ground. Nan said no more and slowly walked toward the creature. When she finally got near enough, she caught her breath. It was a baby deer….clearly hurt and sick.
"Nat! How did you-"
"Nan, can't you help it?" Nat prompted her. She gave him an uncertain look, and then turned to the deer.
"I don't have my-"
"Right here," Nat said, pulling her small kit out of his pocket. She gave him an incredulous look and then turned toward the animal. It was too young and weak to protest as she softly and gently began to clean it's wounds. Nat simply stood and watched her, and he thought about how beautiful she was, how skilled, and how happy he would be if this moment could go on forever.

PART 8

"Nick, tell me now just what exactly is going on!!" Jo demanded, wriggling around in the saddle in front of Nick. He just patiently rode on….in the opposite direction of town. "I thought you said one of my sisters was…umm…that something had happened to--"
"I don't remember sayin' that," Nick said scratching his head. She elbowed him and was glad that he couldn't see the small smile on her face.
"Still, if you think this is funny…if this is your idea of some kind of joke then I-"
"No joke Jo, honest! Look, we're almost there."
"Almost where!?!"
Nick slowed the horse and said, "Look, will you at least try not to be so difficult…otherwise, I'm gonna blind-fold ya."
Jo spun around and said, "You wouldn't!" Nick just grinned and started the horse again. Jo was again grateful that he couldn't see the expressions on her face….she wasn't sure she wanted to see them actually….

~~~~~~~~~~
"Thank you," Amy smiled as Laurie helped her out of the carriage. She looked around Plumbfield first with a sigh, then with growing concern. "Rob!" she called, as she spotted the boy walking out of the house, "Where's your mother?"
"Nick kidnapped her," Rob simply said. Amy and Laurie looked at each other, then back to Rob in bewilderment.
"Well, is Nat….or Nan around?" asked Laurie.
"They went to go heal wild animals," Rob shrugged. All Amy could do was blink…and blink…and blink…
"What's Asia doing?" Amy finally managed to get out.
"She went on a picnic," Rob smiled. Amy raised a hand to her head and began to walk inside.
"How about Bess and Dan?" Laurie said, trying to act like these were normal, every day occurrences.
"I think they eloped," Rob said. Laurie's face turned several different colors all at once and Rob quickly said, "I'm just kidding. I think Bess is out back, and Dan's over by the barn."
"Thank you Rob," Laurie said, patting him on the back weakly. He followed Amy into the house and relayed the information to her. "I'll go get Dan, and you can call Bess in--"
"No," Amy interrupted, "I'll go get Dan." Laurie looked at his wife in surprise and she said, "It's alright." Laurie nodded and patted her hand reassuringly before he headed towards the back of the house. Amy walked rather slowly towards the barn, where she found Dan up in the hayloft. Still unnoticed, she actually climbed up the ladder and walked over to Dan.
"Mrs. Laurence!" he exclaimed, beginning to get up.
"No, that's alright," she said, holding up a hand to stop him. She instead sat down next to him, smoothing out her dress. Dan looked at her with a feeling of pure shock and Amy smiled and said, "When we were kids, my sisters and I used to climb up here when we'd come to visit Great Aunt March." Dan nodded, unsure of what else to do. "I'd hate getting dirty, but it was worth it. Even Beth would climb up here, and we'd tell stories or put on small shows. It was our place where we'd go when we couldn't retreat to the attic at home." Amy's smile showed how she seemed to be in another time, remembering so many things.
"Look, Mrs. Laurence, Bess and I were talkin', and we--"
"Dan," Amy interrupted, raising her hand, "I love my husband very much. There is no other person that I'd rather share my life with. But sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we had taken our time. We'd still be in love, we'd still be together, but would we have had those…problems we had some time ago?" Amy picked at her dress and looked anywhere but Dan's direction as she talked. Her last words were said slowly and hesitantly, "Time is a precious gift. It doesn't ebb away love, rather changes it, and allows it to grow."
"Mrs. Laurence, we're willin' to wait as long as you want," Dan said.
"It's not up to me," Amy sigh, "You two will know when you're ready...but you both know that the time isn't now." After a time of silence, Dan helped Amy up, and the two quietly climbed down from the loft, soft smiles on their faces.
"It's starting to get dark," Nat remarked.
"It's a shame we can't bring her back to Plumbfield with us," Nan said thoughtfully as she sat, swinging her legs.
"Why can't we?" Nat inquired, also sitting next to her.
"Well, look at her Nat! We can't really move her in the condition she's in," Nan sigh and ran a hand through her hair, "Although I hate to leave her alone…"
"Well…." Nat said with some hesitation, "I did bring some supplies in the wagon…" Nan looked up at him, her eyes full of excitement.
"We could stay here with her! That's a great idea Nat!!" she said with a grin. Nat simply nodded his head weakly; this was not his idea of a good time.
"Won't Mrs. Jo be upset or worried or something?" he asked, trying to mask the hope in his voice.
"I don't think we have to worry about that," Nan said with a grin. Nat gave her a look of confusion and was about to say something when she went on, "You don't know about Nick's "plan"?? Oh boy!! It's a real good one this time." Nat just listened, resigned once again to the plots and adventures of Nan. But this time, it was worth it…..who knew how many adventures they'd have in the future? Who knew how long before the adventures would be over forever?
~~~~~~~~~~

"Bess, my darling," Laurie said quietly, interrupting her peaceful silence as she sat on the back porch.
"Father," Bess said, a mixture of surprise and disappointment in her voice.
"Sweetie, your mother and I came over here to tell you that--"
"You were right," Bess said simply, "We shouldn't get married. We should wait, and explore our dreams…and…well…Father, I understand all that. It makes perfect sense! But I can't help wondering…being afraid...Father, you know as well as I do that Dan has always been adventuresome. And I think that over the years, I've gotten used to it, and even adapted some of his ways." As Bess paused to grin, Dan and Amy reached the back door, where they stopped once they heard her go on.
"For all he says Father, all of it, I can't help thinking that there are a million girls out west who are as adventuresome as he is. Girls who wouldn't mind rooms full of spiders…girls who wouldn't spend the entire day painting away…"Bess trailed off for a moment, "And I'm afraid that he'll find one of those girls…and he'll realize…"
"That ain't gonna happen Bess," Dan said, walking out onto the porch with Amy. Bess stood up in surprise, her eyes betraying the fear she had just spoken of. Amy and Laurie, sensing that this was now leaving their hands, stepped back and quietly listened.
"Do you promise?" Bess said, a small smile playing across her face. Dan nodded and moved closer to her.
"I mean, some girls may actually like spiders…but no one makes me as mad as you," Dan grinned. Bess gave him a look, yet held out her hand to him. He took it gently, and then squeezed it for reassurance.
"Well, look on the bright side! This gives us more time to plan the wedding!" Amy said suddenly. The others just rolled their eyes and grinned.

~~~~~~~~~~
"Nick! When can I look?" Jo asked again.
"Just a little while longer," Nick said, leading the blindfolded Jo by foot.
"If I trip…"
"You won't."
"Still I don't see why I have to--" Jo muttered as she tried to remove the blindfold. She only succeeded in tripping…right into Nick's arms.
"Alright, you're gonna hurt yourself…" Nick said, finally removing the blindfold. As he helped Jo up, his arms still around her, she suddenly took a sharp breath. They were in a small meadow that had been transformed into a brilliant dream. There were candles set up around a picnic blanket --filled with food.
"Nick," Jo breathed, "Did you do this yourself?"
"Aww, no," Nick said, running a hand through his hair, "It was actually Asia's idea…I didn't think she'd do this much…"
"No," Jo said, stepping away from Nick and towards the blanket, "It's amazing." She sank down, and after looking all around again, she peered inside the basket. "Chocolate cake!?" she said with a grin, "Asia really shouldn't have." She was about to begin unpacking the rest of the food when Nick's hand stopped her.
"Wait a minute, there's somethin' I wanna do first," he said. Jo swallowed hard as Nick inched closer to her's. Closer…closer…and he reached behind her for something. Giving a small sigh of relief, Jo smiled.
"What's that?" she inquired after the book in Nick's hand.
"This is what I want to show ya," Nick said with a grin, holding it out to her. She gave him a funny look but opened up the book anyway.
" I have met with but one or two persons in the course of my life who understood the art of Walking, that is, of taking walks, who had a genius, so to speak, for sauntering; which word is beautifully derived "from idle people who roved about the country, in the middle ages…" Jo stopped and looked up at Nick, "Thoreau?" Nick nodded with a grin.
Jo returned the grin and then began to flip through the book, looking for a certain part. "Here we are," she exclaimed pushing the unused book open a bit more, "Would you mind?" Nick gave her an uneasy look; reading still wasn't his favorite activity.
"Well…" Nick, about to decline, took one glance at Jo and…well… "Alright." Jo gave a look of delight and handed the book over to him.
"The sun sets on some retired meadow, where no house is visible, with the glory and splendor that it lavishes on cities, and perchance, as it has never set before,-where there is but a solitary marsh hawk to have his wings guilded by it, or only a musquash looks out from his cabin, and there is some little black-veined brook in the midst of the marsh, just beginning to meander, winding slowly round a decaying stump. We walked in so pure and bright a light, gilding the withered grass and leaves, so softly and serenely bright-I thought I had never bathed in such a golden flood, without a ripple or a murmur to it. The west side of every wood and rising ground gleamed like the boundary of elysium, and the sun on our backs seemed like a gentle herdsman, driving us home at evening," Nick finished, his gaze flickering up at Jo. He was staring at her now, deeply lost in thought.
"What else have you got there Nick?" Jo asked after a time, pointing to another book.
"Hmm?" Nick mumbled, coming out of his "trance."
"The other book…" Jo smiled self-consciously.
"Oh, this is umm….well, the Thoreau book is from me, I thought you might like it--"
"I do," Jo said, holding the book tighter.
Nick smiled in satisfaction and, handing Jo the book said, "Asia told me to bring this. Said you liked some of these."
"Sonnets?" Jo breathed in surprise. Then, giving Nick a playfully skeptical look, she added, "Shakespeare?" Nick gave her a sheepish look, but she smiled reassuringly. "Asia was right…actually, one of my favorites is right…here," Jo smiled as she found what she was looking for.
"Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved,"
Jo finished with a far off look in her eyes.
"Beautiful," Nick simply said.
"What is?" Jo questioned, her eyes betraying her hope.
"The…poem," Nick said, to accustomed to hiding to change his ways this once.
"Yes, it is," Jo said, shrugging off her "ridiculous" notion that Nick had actually been talking about her.
"Well," Nick said, filling in the sudden silence, "You wanna eat?" Jo smiled and pulled the basket closer.
"I thought you'd never ask," she smiled. It took all of two seconds for her to playfully slap Nick's hand and say, "Hey, dessert is last!" And so their "bantering," which over the years they had successfully made into an art, continued.
~~~~~~~~~~

"Gosh, I wonder how that whole Bess and Dan thing worked out," Nan said with a yawn.
"I know what you mean. Those two just belong together," Nat said with a tired grin, "And he's always been sweet on her."
"Oh," Nan said uncomfortably, "well I didn't mean that. I was just thinking of how if they do plan on gettin' married, Bess' mother is gonna…explode." Nat smiled-he always had to-considering the way Nan talked!! Yet he couldn't help feeling disappointed. Over the years, had Nan really become so involved in her work and studies that she forgot about…well…about love? Or, was it as Nat had feared all along…Nan truly cared for him only as a friend.
"Alright, well we should at least try to get some sleep," Nat said, giving Nan a "you're going to listen to me this time because it's for your own good" look.
"Oh alright," Nan said, noticing the look and giving in before she had to "bear" another "lecture" from Nat on how to keep herself safe and healthy. She got down on the ground, and found that there was no comfortable way to position her head. There was nothing she could put under it, because they needed the coats and blankets to keep warm. She tried to put her arm under it, but after a minute or two, it really began to hurt.
"You okay Nan?" Nat asked in concern.
"Fine," was her snappish reply. Nat gave a sigh in return, and did something rather bold. Looking back the following day, he wasn't at all sure why he chose that particular evening, when they had shared so many together…
Nat moved over next to Nan and, in the midst of her "what are you doing's?" he gently scooped up her head. That, of course, caused her to cease all verbal communication. She just sort of looked at him in uncertain awe, as if the moment were playing out in slow motion. He placed it gently in his lap, and spread another blanket over her.
Her gaze darted around nervously as he said, "That better?"
She nodded and, almost as if putting up a front said, "What would I do without you Nat? You're my best friend…" And with a yawn, she quickly dozed off. Nat waited until her breathing became perfectly even before he moved. He pushed her hair back from her face and leaned in close.
Planting the smallest and most delicate kiss on her cheek, he whispered, "I love you." A few minutes later, after he himself was half asleep, Nan's eyes flew open. Had Nat been looking, he'd have seen a rare sight that he could barely remember seeing ever; had he been looking, he'd have seen straight into her mind, her heart…and her soul.

~~~~~~~~~~
"…Yeah! I could hardly believe it when she took off that hat," Nick chuckled.
"I was so proud of her…shocked as well! And to think that Franz went along with it. Franz! He always did have a special bond with Nan. Yet I'd never had imagined that he'd do something so…so…exciting," Jo said. Nick gave her a look that said, 'you think a girl entering a boy's skiing race is exciting?' "Well it was for them at the time," Jo said giving Nick a look, "Besides, things are different now. I do think Franz is going to go back out west and find Isabel."
"He should," Nick said, switching the picnic basket to the other arm as they reached the front of the house.
"Mmm," Jo nodded and turned to face Nick. She smiled up at him and could feel her cheeks turning pink. "You know, every time this happens I always feel…"
"Awkward," Nick finished for her. She bowed down her head a little, smirking. "It don't gotta be Jo," he went on, "We've known each other how long?"
Jo looked up at him in silence and Nick took that moment…..he took it and ran with it. "Jo, I remember when I first came here. How you'd be tellin' me stories about the kids, parts of their lives I didn't even know about. But now look at us! It's years later, and we have stories of our own. I have a family. And there's no one I'd rather be sharin' this with than you," he stepped closer to her as she inched closer to him.
"I feel the same way," Jo said, a little tentively, "At the end of the day, after all the kids were it bed, I'd love how we'd just sit and talk. When you first came, it was as though I needed that conversation to get me through all the days without Fritz. But then…I wanted the conversation because I couldn't imagine life with out it." She leaned in and touched her forehead against Nick's.
"Maybe it's time we…"
"Aunt Jo!"
"Nick!! Are they with you??"
Nick and Jo casually broke apart, giving each other reluctant glances at first. But then, really hearing why they were being called, Nick replied, "Is who with us?"
"Nat," Dan said.
"And Nan," Bess finished.
"Why would they be with us?" Jo said, her brow creased, "Shouldn't they be here?"
"Yeah, well they're not," Dan said, his mouth forming a grim line.
"Rob said Nat took Nan out into the woods this morning, and they haven't been back since," Bess added.
"Well we have to find them," Jo said, pulling the horse from Nick.
"Jo," he resisted, "You can't go out now, it's freezin'!"
"Well I've got to find them!"
"No ya don't," Nick said, much to the shock of Jo. "They're just 'bout grown up now, and Nat and Nan can certainly fend for themselves. If they ain't back by mornin', then we can go out lookin' for them." Jo gave him a rather hostile look, but nodded her head. Letting Nick assume control over the reigns again, she stalked off to the house, nearly slamming the door.
As the three stared after her, Dan said, "Things go good?"
"They were," Nick said with a bit of a groan.
~~~~~~~~~~

The next morning Nat and Nan returned, much to the relief of everyone. Nan and Nat never spoke of the events of that night, much like Nick and Jo. Yet unlike Nat and Nan, there was a definite change in the relationship between Nick and Jo. All the children noticed it. That indescribable bond between them was as strong as ever, yet Jo's few weeks of perfect peace were soon shattered by the departure of Rob.
"You're sure you have everything?" Jo said, holding both of Rob's hands in her own at the train station. Nick stood off to the side, giving mother and son a private moment.
"I do, everything, mother," he said with a small grin.
"And you know that if you need anything, anything at all--"
"I know," he said again, squeezing her hand.
Feeling that precious few minutes were left, Jo said, "Remember home Rob. Everything we've taught you. Your father, your aunts…everyone."
And Rob, sending her a message through his eyes that no words could ever possibly tell, simply said, "Thank you." As Jo held back tears, Rob walked over to Nick.
"You take care of yourself huh?" Nick said with a grin.
"I'm gonna miss you Nick."
"I'm….gonna miss ya too…," Nick said slowly, thinking again about how much he hoped that he had been a good father figure.
"You'll take care of mother," Rob said. It was more of a statement than a question, but Nick nodded anyway. "Nick," Rob said pausing, "I don't really remember my father that well anymore. I try to, for mother's sake, but I can't. I will always love him, and I know that the reason I find it hard to remember him is that he died so long ago. But part of that reason is also that the role has been filled, by someone whom he would have considered worthy." Nick, the "sturdy sea man" found that he could feel traces of tears in his eyes.
Rob then shook Nat and Dan's hands, telling each of the boys - men - how they were his personal heroes. He hugged Bess and Nan, and then turned to Jo for the big finale, the final goodbye. She held him tighter than she ever had before, or at least it seemed like it. And then, he was gone. Nick stood next to Jo, yet he didn't reach out to her, or hold her; he knew she was saying goodbye to her only child, and that she was strong enough to do it on her own - what's more, she needed to do it on her own.
It wasn't until the train began to pull away from the station that Jo reached her hand back slowly, knowing Nick would be there to take it. And Nick, knowing she'd eventually reach out, was there for her.

~~~~~~~~~~
Those final weeks between Rob's departure, and that of the rest of the kids seemed to fly by faster than the ones before. Before Jo knew what had hit her, it was the night before…before…she didn't know exactly.
The stars had never been brighter to her as she sat on the fence post out by the paddock. So lost was she in the night sky that she never even heard Nick approaching.
"Can't ever get enough of that sky huh?" Nick said with a grin. Jo looked up at him in surprise. "Mind if I sit?" Jo thought about it for a moment, then nodded and scooted over.
He let the silence drag on until Jo was ready to talk. "I've always loved this time of the day," she said finally, "It's SO peaceful. The children were always safe, and in bed…well…most of the time anyway. And there were no surprises, no bad things happened. No one could leave you at night." Nick listened to her words and felt a pang of sympathy for this mother who seemed to be "loosing" her children…in her eyes anyway. "And you know," she went on again, "They're not the only ones leaving." At Nick's confused glance she said, "Nick, you're going to have to leave too."
"Jo…" he began.
"No," Jo went on, "Nick, as much as I want you to stay, you know you can't. It's one thing for us to live here with the children…another for us to live here by ourselves. Even if we're courting--especially if we're courting."
"Are we courtin'?" Nick grinned. At Jo's terrified glance (had she said something wrong? Had she assumed too much?) Nick quickly put a hand on her arm. "Jo! Since the moment I first saw you, I thought you were beautiful. And whether it's been official or not…" Jo smiled to herself and looked away. "You know," Nick said, removing something from his pocket, "There is a way that we could stay here together."
As Jo began to protest, knowing what he was going to say, Nick only put a finger to her lips. He carefully removed a small ring from a worn box and placed it in the palm of Jo's hand. "Nick," she breathed, "It's beautiful! Where did you get this?"
"When me 'n my brother left all them years ago, we each took what we needed," Nick smiled at the memory, a bittersweet smile, "Ben took Pa's watch…he always loved that watch. And I took Ma's weddin' ring. I never really thought I'd ever have use for it…"
"Nick," Jo said, taking a very deep breath, "I can't." As his face fell she went on to say, "It's not that I don't care for you, because I do. Nick…I…I love you. As a friend, and as so much more. And the thought of you leaving along with the children," she paused as she just couldn't find any more words. Nick pulled her closer to him, and before she knew what was happening, he'd kissed her.
"Jo, I don't gotta leave," he said again.
"Yes you do. Nick, I can't marry you," she repeated herself as well, "Not now. Not for this reason. Nick, I won't marry you just because I don't want to be alone!" They sat in silence for a few minutes, each thinking of the others words.
"That's fair Jo," Nick said, "But even if I don't live here, you ain't gonna be alone."
"I know that Nick, and I trust in that," she said with a smile, "That's probably one of the only things that allows me to let those children leave."
"But you won't marry me?" Nick said, as if trying to make himself understand and believe.
"No, not now," Jo said, leaning against him.
"Never thought I'd ask anyone that," Nick said with a chuckle, "And if I did, never thought she'd say that…"
Jo smiled at first, but then said soberly, "I'm sorry Nick."
"Aww, that's alright. Laurie told me awhile ago that he knew a place I could stay if I had to," Nick said, "It's close by."
After some more silence, Jo got down and said, "I'm going to turn in…it's going to be a long day tomorrow."
She looked at Nick expectantly and he said, "I'm gonna stay out here a while." She nodded and was just walking off when she remembered the ring in her hand.
"Oh Nick," she said, a bit sheepishly, "Here, I'm sure you want this back."
"Naw, you keep it."
"Oh Nick, I couldn't possibly-"
"Jo, that's one of the most important things I own. One of the only things left from my family, my past. I don't remember my Ma much, but I know that if she could 'a met ya, she would 'a loved ya. So, I know she'd want you to have it anyway," Nick said. Seeing some lingering doubt on Jo's face he added, "You keep it till I put it on your finger."
She smiled, nodded, and began to walk away. As he watched her go, he silently wondered how everything works out, even though it never seems like it will. His coming there…his staying there…
"Oh Nick!" Jo called, walking back a bit. Nick almost groaned, not wanting her to try and give the ring back again.
"What?" he called.
"Ask me again sometime," she said. And while it appeared to be a statement, Nick also felt that there was some question to it.
Nick gave her one of his famous looks and simply nodded. With a smile, Jo walked on towards the house. Before turning in for the night herself, she made sure to check on the kids. 'Even after all these years,' she thought as she stared at the sleeping lumps, a wave of safe peace washing over her. If only she knew that those "sleeping lumps" were really pillows…
PART 9
"This better be good Dan," Nan muttered as she climbed the ladder to the loft in the barn.
"Okay, we're all here now," Dan said, ignoring her comment, yet shooting her a look.
"Yes Dan," Bess said, seated between Dan and Nan in their little circle, "But why are we here?"
"Well, I figured that this is probably our last night together for a while, and that we should… aww, I dunno," Dan said, suddenly feeling a tad foolish.
"No Dan, you're right. It was a good idea," Nat protested.
"Well I don't think so. I mean, it's not like we're never going to see each other again," Nan muttered.
"Yes, but we don't know exactly when that'll be," Bess said gently.
There was silence in the room for a time, and then Dan said, "That's it! We have to set a date!" The other three looked at him in confusion. "A date when we're all gonna meet again," Dan explained. Bess' face lit up, and Nat looked interested as well.
"Well, we're going to be married in a year…" Bess started.
"What about Christmas?" Nat asked.
"Christmas in a year!" confirmed Dan. Then, all three gave Nan a tentative look.
"Oh," she muttered, "All right." She reluctantly put both of her hands in the middle of their little "circle," palms up. Bess gently placed her hand in Nan's as Nat firmly grasped the other. Once all their hands were joined, Dan again repeated their promise.
"Christmas in a year."
"In a year," was their joint reply.
~~~~~~~~~~

"Come in!" Jo called in answer to the knock on her door.
Nick walked in and smiled at the sight of her in her new dress. "You all ready?" he asked. She nodded and stretched out her hands towards him. He took them in his own, momentarily glancing down at her hands.
"I put it here," she said, referring to the ring that she knew he was wondering about. She lifted her necklace out from her collar where she usually carefully hid it daily. On the chain was her locket from Rob, her old wedding ring, and the Nick's gift to her from the night before. He nodded with a smile.
"Asia's just 'bout done sayin' bye to the kids," Nick said.
"She's still not going to the station?" Jo asked.
"Naw," Nick simply replied. After a moment or two of silence Nick asked, "You okay?"
Jo paused and gave him a look, telling him that no, she wasn't "okay," but she'd survive. She said, "Let's go, they can't miss their rides." She put up a brave smile, took Nick's arm, and, picking up a small stack of something, walked out of the room.

~~~~~~~~~~
"I love you mother," whispered Bess as she enveloped her mother in a hug.
"And I love you. Remember, if you need anything, we're not that far, and Nat will be there-" Amy was interrupted by Nat again reassuring everyone that he'd be there to watch out for Bess.
"You write and tell us how it is working for a big newspaper," Harrison Bridger said, patting Nat on the back.
"I will," Nat said, grinning from ear to ear.
"Okay guys," Nick said, returning from his trip to inquire about the departure time.
They all nodded, realizing that this was it…not yet quite sure what 'it' was…but that this was it. Dan folded Bess into a lasting embrace, and, after a moment of hesitation, Nat and Nan hugged as well. Then, all four drew in close to Jo, for their final moments together.
"I," Jo began in a slightly shaky voice, "will always remember the day that each of you came to Plumbfield, and how much joy you brought into my life. This will always be your home; you'll always be welcome here. And so, when things get tough, and you want to give up or quit, always remember that you must try. It's true that if you don't try, you can't fail, but it's also true that if you don't try, you'll never succeed."
"I love you Mrs. Jo," Nan whispered, hugging her very close. And each of the four took their short turn with her. Right before they left, Jo pressed a small envelope into each of their hands. On each envelope, a name was neatly written.
"Read those today, or tomorrow…not now…when you need that extra boost of courage and hope," Jo said softly. And then, the moment came. Nat helped Bess up and into the train, all the while his eyes following Nan as she got onto her train. Dan gazed at Bess and Nat's train until it was a small speck, and then, with a final nod to Nick and Jo, he rode off…west.
"You ready to go home?" Nick asked gently.
"No," she mumbled, not really paying attention, "I'll walk."
Nick shared a worried glance with Amy and Laurie and then looked up at the darkening sky. "Seems like it'll rain soon," he said slowly.
"I'll be fine," she said reassuringly, squeezing his hand. He hesitated a second, and then nodded, walking away. And as the wind picked up, Jo calmly walked over to the graveyard, up to a certain gravestone.
"Well," she whispered, kneeling close to the ground, "they've finally grown up. All of them." And for what seemed to be an eternity, she sat there, just thinking about the past, the events of that day….and what was to come.
~~~~~~~~~~

Later that day, all the kids, tired out from their journey, made it to their respective destinations. And, remembering Jo's words, they each opened their letters. What they found inside….well…Bess was the first to open hers, not knowing that it was no different than the others.

	Dearest Bess,
	I shall always love you, and Plumbfield shall always be your home.
	I hope as you read this that you remember that the most important
	things in life never change.
								All my love,
								Aunt Jo
Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove

Bess, holding the letter in her hand with her art portfolio walked up the steps of her new home; a rooming house shared by girls from all walks of life-some finer than her own. Taking a deep breath, she walked inside, head held high, a warm smile on her face…

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

Nan, also holding the letter along with her new biology and chemistry books, slowly looked up from her shoes as she rounded the corner. Before her stood a massive campus…medical school. A long road seemed to stretch in front of her, filled with many hardships and obstacles. As she neared the gates to the campus, she resisted the urge to look back, and instead secured a firmer grip on her suitcase, pushed her hair back, and walked onto that campus with purpose…

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:

Dan, letter in his shirt pocket, pulled his horse up along side a group of travelers. After a few moments of conversation, smiles broke out on both ends, and Dan followed suit with the rest of the wagons and horses, all headed toward western dreams…

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

Nat folded the letter carefully, and stuck it in his journal. As he unpacked his few possessions by his new desk, he lifted out a picture of his family…the only family he'd ever known. Looking at Nan and imagining her brave figure beside him, he walked towards the office of his new boss…

If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved…

Jo turned her face up towards the sky as a light mist began to fall. The day's weather went along wonderfully with her own mood. As she neared Plumbfield, she steeled herself for what she had been expecting: the empty house. Yet what she hadn't expected was the flood of memories that practically ran her over the minute she touched the gate. Oh….that gate….

The wagon came to a slow halt, and everything happened almost as if they were living out the moment in slow motion…in wonder…in shock and awe. Dan was the first to jump down, helping Jo next. She walked with a happy stride towards the gate, pausing at its threshold to just look at their beautiful home. She placed her hands on the bars and could have sworn that she felt the life and power inside that place. But when she pushed open the gate, the right side jerked and then fell as it had been doing for a while now. She turned back just in time to see Nick give the gate a deathly glare, yet she smiled all the same.
"Well, it isn't perfect, but it's still the best school in town! Let's go!" she said, miraculously finding just the right words. It was all the children needed. They were off and running…she and Franz close behind…they had never been so frightened, or so relieved…

As Jo closed the gates, other memories, much more grim, fluttered through her mind…

"One of the boys had pneumonia," Jo said, her voice catching just a bit.
"Had?" Meg barely got out. Jo took a silent breath. Once they found out about this, it would only make things worse - much worse.
"Marcus Carter…he died today," Jo said finally, causing just the very uproar she had feared…
Later, she had walked the long path back up to the house alone, fighting all her different emotions…fear, despair, the unknown…

Just as she was now, or so it seemed. She slowly made her way towards the schoolhouse, face turning a shade more pale as she imagined the voices of the children echoing off the walls…

Jo coughed once more, furiously trying to brush the chalk dust from her dress. "I'm okay, I'm okay! See, everything's under control!" she said, trying to sound convincing while Dan and Emil looked on in despair . . . . . . . .

.
"Alright Bess! Jump!" Tommy said in excitement - this was gonna be fun!
"I don't think so," Bess said carefully, wanting to make sure that they ALL knew that there was no way she was jumping off this thing.
"Yeah he did! I saw it! It was about a foot long, and there was dried blood ALL OVER IT!"
"Tommy," Dan said, getting a bit more agitated, "He didn't have a tomahawk. He just wanted to know what we were doin'."
"Yeah," Tommy said, a little defeated, "And then Dan had to go and break his mask right in front of him."
"I'll bet he was mad," remarked Nat, not wanting to upset Dan further.
"I'm surprised he didn't kill ya right there," Nan said, soliciting a glare from Dan.
"I hear they torture people to death when they're mad at them," Emil grinned . . . . . .

Jo pulled her shawl more tightly around her and said with a slight laugh, "A barn. What kind of school is located…in a barn?"
Franz gave her a look that he hoped betrayed all that he felt and could not say. "The best school," he said, barely above a whisper.

Jo, pulled out of her reminiscing found that she had somehow made her way upstairs to the children's rooms….their old rooms…and words of all the many emotions that these walls had seen slowly passed through her mind…

"You outta be ashamed of yourselves!" . . . . . . .

"Maybe you could be that someone for me."
"Sure."
"And maybe I could be that someone for you…". . . . . . .

"These measles are gonna sweep through here faster than a bunch of locusts…" . . . .

.
"You're gonna get well. You ALL are. I promise…" . . . . . . . . .

"Nan, there are much more interesting things to talk about than dissecting worms."
"Like what?"
"Like…boys!"
"I'd rather talk about worms…" . . . . . . . . . .

"I'm sorry that you slipped and fell Tommy, but I am SO happy that you climbed that tree. I hope you climb many more…" . . . . . . . . . . . .

A while later, after the rain had subsided, Nick, wandering around the house, finally found Jo at the kitchen table. Her head rested on her arms, and when she looked up he could see some traces of tears on her face. He gave her a supportive look and sat down across from her, waiting for her to speak first.
"I thought you'd be moving," Jo said. Was there a slight edge to her voice?
"I uh….I'm goin' tomorrow mornin'," he said lightly.
"Actually Nick," Jo said, plowing on as if Nick had never even spoken, "Why are you even going to stay around here at all? I mean, you must want to go back to the sea!"
"Jo, really, I--"
"There's nothing here for you Nick!" Jo said, her voice getting slightly louder, more upset.
"That ain't true," he said, trying to make his voice soft compared to her sharp tone.
She got up from the table, a look of defeat on her face, and said, "Maybe it is." She slowly walked out of the room, out of the house, and away to who knew where.

Later that evening Nick, becoming troubled by the lack of Jo's presence as well as her harsh words before, found himself wandering to a place on the Plumbfield property that he had fondly come to think of as his own. It was where he went when he needed to think about things in general…or make specific decisions…
As he weaved his way through the trees, he came to the giant rock that hung a few feet over the shore of the pond, almost a mini-cliff. He walked over to the edge, and sigh as he looked out over the land.
"Beautiful isn't it?" a voice interrupted him. Jo sat, ruffled skirts and all, on the other side of the rock.
"How'd you know about this place?" he asked.
"How did you?" was Jo's reply. Nick just regarded her with an ironic sort of look.
"Figures," he muttered, but his face showed good humor. He hesitantly took a seat next to Jo, once he found her gaze to be warm and inviting.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, each willing and waiting for the other to go first.
"Nick I--"
"Jo, when I--" They each gave a laugh, and Nick motioned for Jo to go first.
"Well, about what I said before…I didn't mean it. I know you have to leave, and well…I suppose I just thought that you'd naturally want to go…"
"Jo, the sea will always be a home to me," Nick said, "But so is Plumbfield. And as much as I'd like to go back…"
"You can't," Jo said, a sort of 'wonder of understanding' in her voice. Nick shook his head.
"I always thought to myself that some day I would…after the kids were gone, after I wasn't needed no more. I never even imagined…" he trailed off, clearly lost in her face for the moment.
"Neither did I," she said, looking down modestly. Once she looked back up and their gazed locked, there was nothing more that words could express on this, their last night together before everything was finally changed.

Jo practically ran downstairs, her hair undone, clothes haphazardly buttoned. "Nick!" she called out, seeing him begin to walk down the path. He winced a little; she had caught him.
"Jo," he said, a guilty look on his face.
"Must you always leave with out saying good bye?" Jo asked, trying to keep the saddened grin from her face. She then turned serious and looked at him closely, "So, this is it huh?"
"Yeah," Nick nodded and ran a hand through his hair.
"Well then…you better get going," Jo said, altering her gaze between Nick and the long road.
"Yeah," he said again.
"Nick….good bye," Jo said, giving him an encouraging look.
"Bye," he said, rather reluctantly, and began to make his way down the road.
"Nick!" Jo called after him. He turned back expectantly. "Would you care to have breakfast here tomorrow?"
"Sure Jo," he said with a grin, "I'd love to."
"Okay! Bye," she called, and then busied herself with cleaning up the porch.
"Jo," Nick called.
"Yes?" Jo couldn't keep the mixed emotions out of her voice.
"Walk me to the gate?" She simply nodded, and the two walked in a comfortable silence. They both knew that they were no longer afraid of this new change, just rather reluctant to see it all happen so fast.
"Well, here we are," she said wistfully as they reached the gate.
Nick nodded his head and there were a few awkward moments where Jo made small movements as if she were going to turn around and go back to the house, and then changed her mind.
"You know," Nick remarked and Jo's interest sprang into action, "I could use some help fixin' up the new place…"
"Of course you do," Jo said in agreement. Then when Nick gave her an encouraging glance she said, "Oh, I'd love to help you…" He grinned and gave her his arm as they started down the main road.
"Don't you want to get the horses?" Jo asked.
"I think it'd be nicer if we walked," Nick smiled and Jo returned his smile.
"You know," went on, their voices becoming fainter as they walked farther down the road, "I could even cook us some dinner."
"You?" Jo chuckled, "You can cook?"
"Sure I can," Nick replied in a mock hurt voice.
"Where on earth did you learn to cook?"
"Well once, I was on this ship off the port of…."
