sports tidbits
*Between 1983 and 1985, football fans could watch the game year-round, thanks to the USFL. This short-lived football league scheduled its games during the spring and summer.

*For Chicago Bears fans, 1985 was the best year ever. The season ended on a high note when the Bears won Super Bowl XX in January 1986. In October 1985, the team made a record and video for charity entitled The Super Bowl Shuffle. Believe it or not, the song actually reached #41 on the Billboard charts and was nominated for a Grammy.

*In 1980, a ragtag bunch of college hockey players became the heroes of a nation. That year, the U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated formidable teams from the U.S.S.R. and Finland to win the gold medal.

*In the 1988 Winter Olympics, figure skaters Debi Thomas and Katarina Witt were both favored to win the gold medal. Ironically, they both performed their routines to the music from Carmen. When it was all over, Witt took the gold and Thomas took the bronze. And what about second place? While everyone was worrying about Carmen, Elizabeth Manley quietly stepped up to capture the silver.

*Another great story from the 1988 Winter Olympics was that of the Jamaican Bobsled Team. Although they came in last place, the public was captivated by the idea of a bobsled team from a tropical island.
