About this car: I bought it in February '98 from a mutual friend and an amateur VW restorer. He got it from a friend who kept it in a garage for about 5 years. It seems to have come from a dealer in St. Louis, though I haven't done the research. I was looking for a bug to drive and this car was in very good condition. I would like to restore it, but i have no garage or experience. The engine seized up on me on the way to Mofoco's Bugfest in August. My mechanic says the main bearings are worn ($35 for new ones). It would be easier to replace the engine with a quality rebuilt which starts around $550. The car has the following new/newer parts:
New Rear Tires (3/99) Starter (12/98)
Clutch (11/98) Ball joints (10/98)
   Throw-out bearings
   Sachs pressure plate
   clutch disc
Steering Damper (10/98) Tie rods (10/98)
Rear Floor Pans (5/98) New Paint (5/98)
Rebuilt Windshield wiper motor (5/98) New Battery (5/98)
Gravel guards (5/98) New muffler and exhaust tips (3/98)
New Brake shoes (3/98)
This car has passed the emissions test in May '98. On some bugs the following doesn't work, mine DO work:
Headlights Interior light Windshield wiper Doors Windshield Washer
Brake lights Trunk release Hazard lights Horn Reverse (and all other gears, too)
The car is essentially stock. The transmission is manual ("stick shift"). No broken glass. Full size original spare, w/German tire are included. Original tools negotiable. The car has approximately 90,000 mi. There is no indication that it is inaccurate. What else does the car need? New Pans for the front Driver and Passenger, and a new radio (the non-original Blaupunkt is included, but does not work). The seats in front are worn, but have original upholstery. Also original headliner, with minor tears. There is some minor surface rust. Essentially, to drive this car the engine must be repaired ($35/$550+) and the front floors need attention. Then you can drive it. Any more questions, then please email me at: rentabug@lycos.com
