Wedge Antilles saw a dedicated pilot in Derek "Hobbie" Klivian, a soft-spoken and driven former Imperial cadet who had participated in a daring mutiny and jump to the Alliance. While it is true that Hobbie's ships often seem to be magnetically attracted to the ground, his long experience flying the X-wing and his knack for surviving the worst crashes have made him a pillar of Rogue Squadron. His squadronmates often joke about his fondness for bacta baths, but he actually was contacted by Bulior Repulsor Systems when the company sought his endorsement of the crash-repulsor cribs common to many Alliance fighters.
After leaving Rogue Squadron, Hobbie started training New Republic squadrons with Wes Janson. Together they trained three X-wing squadrons: Gauntlet Squadron, Corsair Squadron, and Talon Squadron. Shortly after finishing the training of Talon Squadron, Hobbie was asked to fly the replacement Rogue Squadron until the real Rogues returned from the Bacta War. When the Rogues returned, Hobbie rejoined their ranks
