Trent Reznor beware: Videodrone is looking to usurp the throne of darkness that you abdicated with your five-year absence. They have put forth an album that mixes the best of metal, goth, ’80s synth-pop and all that is still alive in hard rock today.

Synthetic and real drums set the amphetamine-like pace for most of their songs, “The Devil’s Sweepstakes” being the prime example. Surprisingly, however, Videodrone does not stick to one set formula for its songs.

The stylistic changes from song to song show incredible maturity, as they range from the muted anger of Alice in Chains and the depressionist intonations of Bauhaus in “Alone with 20 Bucks,” to the metal-rap of House of Pain mixed with the evil monotone wailings of Marilyn Manson in “Pig In A Blanket.”

Technical mastery of synthetic sounds is one of their strong points and it will be interesting to see how well they translate into live performances.

With the technologic leaps and bounds made by such artists as Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and Crystal Method, the only thing limiting this band from performing at their peak is their limited budget as a relatively unknown band.

Videodrone takes organized cacophony to a new level and should earn a serious cult following during the East coast leg of the “Death of Rock” tour, on which they will accompany Korn and Rob Zombie as the opening act.
